July 14, 2017 Police Blotter

    The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
July 13
    An ambulance was called for a man with chest pains and tunnel vision.
    A juvenile probation officer asked police to stand by while she contacted a juvenile on probation.
    A dog was turned in to the shelter.
    A car was keyed at Crescent Harbor.
    Police picked up a dog running at large and returned it to the caretaker.
    A caller reported a person lying  next to the block house. Police found it was a campsite, but agreed it looked like person at first.
    Police were told a man with an IV and a heart monitor had left his care provider. He returned before officers responded.
    Police talked to a taxi driver reported sleeping in his vehicle in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. He was gone when police arrived at 5:30 p.m. but told officers later that he had been up since 2 a.m. and was headed home.
    A light blue Patagonia jacket was left at city hall about a week ago.
    At 8:20 p.m. a 911 caller said a friend had injured himself while skateboarding on Harbor Drive. An ambulance was dispatched.
    At 10:45 p.m. a friendly dog was reported running loose on Marine Street.
    At 9 p.m. a dazed-looking man in the driver’s seat of a car on Gavan Street was warned about expired license and tags and told not to drive.
July 14
    At 1 a.m. a bear was reported in garbage in the 3800 block of HPR and wouldn’t respond when the resident blew an air horn. The bear was gone when officers arrived, although they said they thought it may be in a nearby wooded area, off Granite Creek Road.

 
    Sitka Police

    Tommy Svilar, 21, was arrested on a warrant Thursday, charging him with two counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree.

    Emergency Calls

    Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 2:48, 5:41 and 8:48 p.m. Wednesday; 7:31 a.m., 8:23 a.m., 10:37 a.m., 4:54 p.m., 5:04 p.m. and 9:06 p.m. Thursday; and 1:51 a.m. today.

    In Court

    Nycholas B. Sanders, 22, was found to have violated conditions of probation. He is to serve five days of suspended time, and follow counseling recommendations, including up to 30 days’ inpatient treatment. He was sentenced to 30 days, with 10 days suspended, and fined $3,000 on a charge of driving under the influence. His license will be suspended one year.
    Walter L. Boyd, 33, was sentenced to 30 days, with 25 suspended, and fined $500 for violating a domestic violence protective order. His .22 caliber pistol that was seized is forfeited to the state, and he will be on probation for a year. He is not to be in contact with one particular person, he is not to be within 50 feet of the SAFV shelter, and is not to have any contact with a particular address on Charles Street, or be within 100 feet.
    Tye L. Finkbeiner, 36, was sentenced to 360 days, with 270 suspended, for assault in the fourth degree, recklessly injure. He was charged with assault in the third degree but pleaded guilty to the lesser count. He will be on probation three years, and isn’t to have any contact with a specified individual.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

50 YEARS AGO

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
