C.G. Lt. Cmdr. Seavey Gets Commendation Medal
U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka Lt. Cmdr. Mark Seavey today received the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, in a ceremony at the station.
The award is given to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Coast Guard, including foreign military personnel, distinguishes himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service.
To merit this award, the acts or services must be accomplished or performed in a manner above that normally expected and sufficient to distinguish the individual above others of comparable grade or rating performing similar services.
Seavey, 35, was cited for outstanding achievement while serving as flight examiner, supply officer and public works officer at Coast Guard Air Station Sitka from August 2014 to July 2017.
The citation said:
‘‘Demonstrating exceptional aviation prowess, he flew more than 880 flight hours and prosecuted 54 search and rescue cases in the treacherous and unforgiving Southeast Alaskan environment, saving 23 lives. As flight examiner, he relentlessly led the unit training program and flew 25 pilot upgrade flights.
His aviation expertise allowed him to fill in as operations officer for over 50 days where he oversaw risk management for 13 search and rescue cases resulting in 10 lives saved. As supply officer, Lt. Cmdr. Seavey expertly managed a $3M budget accounting for a 99.99 percent spend down and executing purchase requests for over $600,000 in time critical fallout funds.
‘‘He also led facility engineering’s maintenance and repair efforts of the 60-acre, $51M facility with 60 housing units and 30 barracks rooms overseeing completion of over 500 work orders and $8.5M in facility upgrades.
‘‘His efforts bolstered District 17 and Sector Juneau readiness while enhancing quality of life for 450 Coast Guard members and dependents across five local commands. Lt. Cmdr. Seavey’s dedication, judgment and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard. The Operational Distinguishing Device is authorized.’’
Seavey is moving to ATC Mobile, Alabama, for his next tour of duty.
