TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Marijuana Facility On Planning Panel Agenda
By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider a conditional use permit for a marijuana cultivation facility at 120 C Jarvis Street.
The applicant is Darren Phillips for Fiberflite LLC, and the listed owner of the building is Baranof Investments LLC. The property is in an Industrial zone and the renters of the two-story building unit plan to build a “structure within the structure” to contain the grow units and mitigate odor, noise and security impacts, said City Planning Director Mike Scarcelli.
Scarcelli said the commission should address a few areas of concern including odor, parking, security and waste management.
Planning staff said that there are no “sensitive uses” within 500 feet, such as youth centers, schools, jails and churches, but noted a few areas where the applicant needs to provide more details.
The planning department recommended approval of the conditional use permit subject to approval of the conditions, and submission of an adequate parking plan, odor control plan, and waste and wastewater disposal plan as determined by the planning director.
A recommended motion notes that “the zoning code has been followed, that the comprehensive plan was consulted, and that there are no negative impacts present that have not been adequately mitigated by the attached conditions of approval for the proposed marijuana cultivation conditional use.”
A second item on the agenda has been pulled, for a zoning map amendment request for the Orthodox and Lutheran cemeteries at 215 Marine Street and 207 Princess Way. The properties are owned by the Diocese of Sitka and Alaska, Orthodox Church in America, and the Lutheran Church Corp. of Sitka, and the city has requested a zoning change from Residential 1, single family and duplex, to Public, to make the zoning more appropriate for a cemetery.
Scarcelli said today the Sitka Historic Preservation Commission asked the item to be postponed to allow the city to contact Sitka Tribe of Alaska, the owners of the land (the churches), and decedents’ relatives.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
