TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Park Walks Set
Sitka National Historical Park offers daily guided programs connecting visitors to the park’s natural and cultural resources.

CGSWA Plans
Welcome Aboard
The U.S. Coast Guard Spouses’ and Women’s Association of Sitka will host its annual Welcome Aboard Social 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Air Station Sitka Eagle’s Nest.
The event is open to all female active and retired USCG personnel and all USCG spouses. Refreshments, door prizes, and information about the club and activities for the upcoming year are planned. Child care is available upon request.

Candidates Forum
Slated Tuesday
Raven Radio will host an election forum for the seven candidates for Assembly before a live audience at Harrigan Centennial Hall 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Assembly Forum
At Chamber Meet
An Assembly candidate’s forum is planned at Wednesday’s noon Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Westmark Sitka.
Candidates are Jaime Ackley, Sheila Finkenbinder, Sonya Smith, Steven Eisenbeisz, Benjamin Miyasato, Richard Wein and write-in candidate Kitty Sopow. Candidates will answer pre-written questions and take audience questions during the forum.

Backpacking 101
At Hames Center
Hames Center will host a ‘‘Backpacking 101 Series’’ workshop beginning Oct. 3.
The class will be lead by NOLS instructor and outdoor enthusiast Meredith Condon. The course will teach the basics of planning and preparing for backcountry adventures and cover topics such as ‘‘Goals and Gear,’’ ‘‘Maps and Route Planning,’’ ‘‘Backcountry Cooking’’ and others. The five-week series runs 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 3-31.

Youth Fencing
Classes on Tap
The Hames Center will offer youth fencing classes beginning Oct. 3. Classes will run for a 10-week series and are led by USA Fencing-certified instructor Joseph Wilson.
Classes will be offered for two age groups: ages 8-12, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays; and ages 12-18, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Space is limited.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
