TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Sitka Boys Rule Home Meet

By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER
Sentinel Sports
The Sitka High boys cross-country running team beat out 12 other schools to win their home meet last weekend. The team had four finishes in the top 10, with sophomore Dominic Baciocco in second, and juniors Joe Pate in third, Skyler McIntyre in sixth place and Tabor Buxton finishing ninth.
In all, 247 athletes competed in the race, which went through Sitka National Historical Park.
“There were so many amazing finishes,” Sitka Coach Shasta Smith said.

Two of the team members – exchange student senior Omar Ali and sophomore Max Johnson – cut more than two minutes from their previous best times this season, she said. Underclassmen Derek Bartlett and Kobi Weiland also improved their races, finishing sub-19 minutes.
“Both Kobi and Derek are first year runners,” she said. “Our future is bright.”
The Sitka High girls placed fifth out of 10 teams. The Edgecumbe girls came in right after the Wolves, with a sixth-place finish. Edgecumbe boys came in at No. 8.

“The girls were the first 3A team,” Smith said.
The girls had some strong runs, too.
“Haley Bartolaba found her groove and cut more than a minute from last week’s race with a finish of 23:46,” Smith said. “Senior Zofia Danielson has improved her time each and every race she has run this season. Ella Lubin was our first female finisher with a time of 22:47.”
Braves Coach Josh Arnold said his team ran hard.
“We’re working to get stronger and faster and that showed,” he said. “From that perspective, we had a great race.”
His team had 52 runners in the race, which made it a lot of fun for the athletes and spectators.
“It was our home race,” he said. “The kids got a chance to run in front of their school and Sitka family.”
Junior Brystel Charlie and senior Laura Ekada paced the girls, finishing first for their team, 19th and 27th, respectively.
For the boys team, senior Isaiah Kline, sophomore Jeremy Ulroan and freshman Kahliel Martin were the top finishers.
Both Sitka and Edgecumbe head to Ketchikan this weekend for the Region V meet. Arnold thinks his teams have a chance of qualifying for state.
“If they pull off their best race on Saturday we could have both teams qualify for state,” he said. “But, we’re all running for second place this year.”
The Sitka boys and Petersburg are the top in the region, Arnold said, and are expected to come in first in Ketchikan.
The top three teams and the first 15 finishers for each gender at regions qualify for the state meet Sept. 30 in Anchorage.
