State Chamber of Commerce Gathering Here
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

The Fall Forum of the Alaska Chamber of Commerce opens here on Tuesday, with about 150 Chamber members and guests from throughout the state expected attend.
The annual event attracts politicians and business and industry leaders for three days of presentations, round-table talks and networking opportunities.
Sessions will be held Tuesday through Thursday at Centennial Hall, with a gala dinner and awards presentation Wednesday night.
The state Chamber website says the forum’s purpose is to highlight issues of statewide importance, set the Alaska Chamber policy agenda, and celebrate the accomplishments of a leading business, a local Chamber of Commerce and an outstanding individual.
This year’s theme, “A Tale of Two Economies: Then and Now,” is a look at how Alaska’s economy has evolved since the transfer of claims from Russia to the United States. “This year’s Fall Forum will fittingly be in Sitka where the sale of Alaska to the U.S. occurred on March 30, 1867,” the website states.
U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan is scheduled to speak at an opening reception and ribbon-cutting at the Aspen Suites Hotel 5 p.m. Tuesday, and participate in a roundtable on federal tax reform 7:15 a.m. Wednesday.
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski will provide an update from Washington, D.C., by videoconference, later Wednesday at a luncheon jointly sponsored by the Alaska and the Sitka Chambers of Commerce.
Gov. Bill Walker and Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott will also be in town during the Chamber conference. Walker, Mallott and other candidates for governor and lieutenant governor in 2018 will be guests on a whale-watching cruise on Thursday.
Some events are open to the public, and those wishing to attend are encouraged to sign up in advance.
The public events include:
– the joint state and local Chamber lunch noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Harrigan Centennial Hall auditorium. Keynote speaker will be Ryan Binkley of the Alaska Dispatch News.
– the Top Business Awards Gala and dinner, 7 p.m. Wednesday at Centennial Hall auditorium.
- lunch and whale-watching cruise on Allen Marine Tours 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
In addition to Walker and Mallott, other declared candidates on the cruise will be Rep. Mike Chenault, former Rep. Lynn Gattis, Republican activist Scott Hawkins, former Sen. Charlie Huggins and Rep. Edie Grunwald.
The schedule is available at http://business.alaskachamber.com, under Upcoming Events, 2017 Alaska Chamber Fall Forum.
Those with questions may call the Sitka Chamber at 747-8604.
