TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Event to Highlight College, Career Choices
By Sentinel Staff
Representatives of more than 50 colleges and other institutions will be here Thursday for the Sitka College and Career Fair at Sitka High School.
They will be available to speak to college-bound students, parents, and community adults interested in furthering their education or career credentials, said Cori Schumejda, Sitka High school counselor.
In addition to numerous private and public two-year and four-year colleges and universities, branches of the military, Job Corps, vocational/technical schools, and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) will be represented.
The job fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sitka High gym.
All students at Sitka High School, Mt. Edgecumbe High School and Pacific High School, along with some Blatchley Middle School students, are scheduled to attend, Schumejda said. All home school students and families also are invited to stop by.
The Sitka College Fair is part of the Alaska College Fair Circuit; many exhibitors and recruiters are beginning their trip in Ketchikan before arriving in Sitka, then continuing on to Juneau, Kenai, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.
The Sitka College Fair is a joint effort coordinated by Sitka High School, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, and the University of Alaska Southeast. Proceeds from exhibitor registrations go to one of the student sports teams or organizations which help to set up and clean up for the event.
Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe counseling staffs are encouraging anyone considering college, technical training, military service, or other opportunities to attend the College Fair, including parents and community adults interested in postsecondary education and training pathways.
