SJ Museum Plans
2 Holiday Events
The Sheldon Jackson Museum invites the public to two upcoming events.
The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum will sponsor a cookie reception in the lobby of the museum 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in observance of Alaska Day. Admission will be waived for all during reception hours.
On Saturday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m., the museum will host its first At Saxan art activity of the fall. Attendees will look at Inupiaq pictograph designs on artifacts in the gallery, learn about bow drills, and make their own paper bow drills with traditional Inupiaq hunting, caribou, sled dog and team, and animal designs.
Sponsored by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum, At Saxan happens every third Saturday and is free of charge. The program is family-friendly and best for ages 6-10.

Unitarians Meet
Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship program will celebrate Alaska Day through literature. Participants are asked to take an Alaskan book, story or poem to share.
All are invited to attend. Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. Soup and bread follow at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.
Pumpkin Patch
Event for Kids
The 5th Annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser for 3 to 5 Preschool is planned 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, on the SJ Campus.
Free mini pumpkins will be given to each child, while supplies last, with purchase of a large pumpkin from Mr. Scarecrow’s one-and-only pumpkin patch in Sitka.
A portion of the sales will be donated to the preschool by A.C. Lakeside.
Harvest-themed games and activities for young children, face painting, a pumpkin roll race, hayride and sing-a-long, bouncy house, photo booth, and crafts are planned.
New this year is an animal viewing area and story time. Admission is $5 a person or $20 for a family of four or more.
Baked goods, jambalaya, walk-away tacos, hotdogs, popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase.
The event will be held rain or shine.
