TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Adds to Alaska
Day Festival
Alaska Airlines is being recognized by organizers of Sitka’s annual Alaska Day Festival for its role in successfully transporting many visitors to take part in the commemoration of the historic 1867 Transfer event at Sitka.
Alaska Airlines has donated two vouchers for travel systemwide valid for one year to be presented as a door prize at the Ball on Tuesday night Oct. 17 at Centennial Hall. Ball ticket holders must be present to win door prizes.
Tim R. Thompson, Alaska Airlines manager of public affairs for Alaska, issued the vouchers.
“As a good corporate citizen, it is our ongoing aim at Alaska Airlines to make a meaningful contribution to the communities that we serve, and we hope that this support will be helpful,’’ Thompson said.
Each coach ticket is valued at $1,250, and does not have any blackout dates applied.
Transportation
Grants Offered
The Sitka Human Services Transportation Advisory Committee is accepting grant applications for capital purchases to provide or support transportation needs of human services clients in Sitka.
For grant purposes, “capital” may include vehicles, IT software or hardware, funds to purchase transportation services. A 20 percent cash match is required.

Open Alaska Day
The Hames Center will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Alaska Day, Wednesday, Oct. 18.
The day’s activities include: Emily at 10:30 a.m. for TRX; Colleen will lead a lunch spin at 12:15 p.m.; Lynn and Kristi will lead dance aerobics at noon; open gym is on the gym floor; and the weight rooms will be open.

Bishop of Alaska
At St. Michael’s
The Right Reverend David, Bishop of Sitka and Alaska will visit St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral this week.
Services scheduled to be celebrated at the Cathedral during the visit of His Grace begin with the Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos, Our Lady of Sitka 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17. A prayer service, called molieben, will be held 10 a.m. on Alaska Day. Thursday at 6 p.m. will be the Akathist Hymn to St. Herman. Weekend services include Great Vespers for the Resurrection Saturday night at 6 p.m. and Divine Liturgy 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Also visiting will be The Most Reverend Benjamin, Archbishop of San Francisco and the West, who will be in Sitka Tuesday, Oct. 17 through Thursday, Oct. 18.
The public is invited to all of the services. St. Michael’s parish wishes to invite the community to the pirok (fish pie) sale 11 a.m. until sold out on Alaska Day at ANB Founders Hall. In addition to the usual fish pie and clam chowder, special Russian guests will provide their traditional dishes and music, an extra sesquicentennial treat. National Park Sets
Alaska Day Events
All are invited to commemorate Alaska Day with Sitka National Historical Park. All events are free and open to the public.
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Russian Bishop’s House Museum, individuals are invited to learn about the Russian history of Alaska and the United States by exploring the first floor museum, watch the award-winning film, ‘‘Russian Bishop’s House: An Icon Reborn,’’ and share views on Russian American history in Alaska.
On Saturday, Oct. 21, two activities are planned.
An open house will be at the Russian Bishop’s House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are invited to learn about the Russian history of Alaska and the United States by exploring the first floor museum, watching the award-winning film, Russian Bishop’s House: An Icon Reborn, and viewing rooms in the restored residence of the bishop on the second floor.
From 2 to 3 p.m. the Russian American History Downtown Walking Tour is scheduled. Walkers can meet at the Russian Bishop’s House at 2 p.m. and join a ranger for a walk to historic sites of Sitka that are associated with Russian colonization of the area and learn about their significance to the people and places of Russian America. The free, hourlong program will conclude at Castle Hill.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
