Kayaking Expedition
To Study Area Whales
Dr. Kate Stafford, Sitka Sound Science Center Scientist in Residency Fellow through Dec. 1, will lead a free kayaking expedition to record the whales in Sitka Sound on Nov. 21.
Stafford is a principal oceanographer at the Applied Physics Lab and affiliate associate professor in the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Her research focuses on using passive acoustic monitoring to examine migratory movements, geographic variation and physical drivers of marine mammals, particularly large whales. Her expertise as an acoustician allows her to investigate the changing acoustic environment of the Arctic and how changes, from sea ice declines to increasing industrial human use, may be influencing subarctic and Arctic marine mammals.
“Sounds in the Sound” is a free community event that involves kayaking (or joining by boat) into Sitka Sound with hydrophones to listen and record whales communicating.
The event is weather dependent and those wanting to participate must sign up in advance.
The group will depart at 11:30 a.m. from the beach next to Sitka Sound Science Center and paddle to Eastern Channel. The group will return to the science center at about 1 p.m. for a question-and-answer event. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided.
Those who don’t kayak, limited spots are available on Davey’s water taxi for $25 each.
