Sitka Boys Basketball Hits Stride In Anchorage
By ABIGAIL BLISS

At the beginning of any sports season, it takes time for new teams to settle into successful patterns and for returning players to step into roles they’ve never played previously.
The Sitka High boys basketball team is no exception. The Wolves are just now cresting that learning curve, head coach Scott Jones said, pointing to the evidence of their progress at the Lime Solar Pepsi Invitational in Anchorage this past weekend.
On Thursday, Sitka squared off against Delta High School, and fell to the Huskies, 77-66.
“It was one of the first times we played a really good team that was our size,” Jones said. “We learned our identity that game. We were still trying to figure out who we were as a team – we knew we were fast, but we were still trying to figure out who would lead us on the floor.”
Tristan Duncan was one such player, the coach said.
“He emerged as a quiet kid who leads by example on the floor,” Jones said.
In fact, the Wolves’ 46-41 win over Eielson in the second game was thanks, in part, to the 24 points Duncan contributed.
“He really carried us offensively,” Jones said. “We just kind of eased into who we were. Guys were starting to accept their roles.”
In their third and final game of the tournament, Sitka High played Bethel, a school that had dealt the Wolves a loss at home in December.
The rematch reflected improvement on the part of his players, Jones said, but the Wolves ultimately fell short of turning the tables on their opponent, losing 54-72.
“The final score didn’t really reflect how the game went,” Jones explained. “Late in the game, they really started to stretch their lead.”
In fact, he said, the Wolves had led the game for a while, and fought back and forth with Bethel for the upper hand throughout its duration.
The Wolves were down by only 5 points at the half, a marked improvement over the 20-point deficit they had faced halfway through the two teams’ first tangle in Sitka.
“It really showed how our team’s growing as the year’s progressing,” Jones said. “Guys are starting to step up to challenges instead of back down.”
In practices this week, the Wolves were slated to focus on improving free throws, which Jones hoped would help them remain competitive against tough opponents and clinch the win in close games.
