LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. Sitka Tells Tales

Event Feb. 25

Sitka Tells Tales, a local live storytelling series, returns 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, with the theme ‘‘Faux Pas: False Steps and Desires for a Do Over.’’  

Tellers include Brit Ashleigh Galanin, Stacy Johnson, Brendan Jones, Hillary Seeland and Matthew Turner. Doors open at 6:30 p.m, downstairs at the Mean Queen. The suggested donation is $5. Baseball, Softball

Tryout Schedule Set

Sitka Little League skills evaluation and tryouts will be Sunday, Feb. 18,  and Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Blatchley Middle School gym.

The schedule will be:

Softball, ages 12-16, noon-1 p.m.; softball, ages 8-11, 1:15-2:15 p.m.; baseball minors, ages 8-11, 2:30-3:30 p.m.; baseball majors, ages 9-12, 3:45-4:45 p.m.; and baseball juniors/seniors, ages 13-16, 5-6 p.m.

Players are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the schedule slot with a glove, clean athletic shoes and clothes for running.

Players should attend the session they would like to be drafted into. They need to be registered prior to attending a tryout session.

Flora of SE Alaska

Class at UAS-Sitka

The University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus is offering ‘‘Flora of Southeast Alaska’’ 5:30-7 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 15-May 3.

The course is designed to introduce students to the flora of Southeastern and Southcentral Alaska. Focus will be on identifying common species and attaining an understanding of their ecological requirements, interaction with other species and human use of plants.

Students will participate in weekly lectures and written exercises or check for understanding activities. No prerequisites are necessary.

This week, the Alaska Legislature will be taking public testimony on plastic bag fees, opioid warnings, Internet neutrality and federal marijuana laws, among other topics.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Workshop Listed

Eduardo Rocha, world-class fourth-degree black belt competitor and teacher of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, will offer a two-part workshop Feb. 24 at the Hames Center.

Rocha will offer a self-defense class for all levels 9:30 a.m.-noon. The second workshop will be an advanced Brazilian jiu-jitsu seminar 1-3:30 p.m. Experience is recommended.
