Barracudas Make Waves at Alaska Age Group Champs

By ABIGAIL BLISS
Sentinel Staff Writer
Sitka’s Baranof Barracudas Swim Club racked up first-place finishes and personal best times at the Alaska Age Group Championships in Juneau over Presidents Day Weekend.
Out of the 12 Barracudas who participated in the 14-and-under event, 78 percent achieved best times, said coach Kevin Knox. The Barracudas placed eighth out of the 21 teams at the competition.

Knox explained that this feat was particularly impressive given the fact that the team was injury- and illness-ridden at the time of the meet.
“We had three kids with the flu, one with a head cold, and we lost one kid to a fractured ankle the day before our swim meet,” he said.
Two swimmers, in particular, battled the stumbling blocks of the season to perform their best.
Emma Gassman won the third-place high point award for 13-year-old girls, and Porter Bastian won the second-place high point award for boys 10 and under.
“(Emma) was swimming against a girl that was breaking state records, so it was pretty cool,” Knox commented.
The Barracudas’ experience at the Alaska Age Group Championships will act as a springboard for many swimmers’ training for the Alaska Junior Olympics in Anchorage on April 26, where wider age-groups require kids to produce faster times to remain competitive.
Knox said the Barracudas currently plan to send 14 swimmers to the 18-and-under Junior Olympics.
“(Alaska Age Group Championships) is a lead up for J.O.s,” he said. “It’s a really good opportunity for kids to race against kids just in their age group ... It builds them up to the level of being able to compete against kids their own age. At J.O.s, the time standards are a little bit faster, and they’re competing against kids in a two-year gap.”

April 2004

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
