Weather Slows Search For 2 Climbers in SE
By Sentinel Staff
Alaska State Troopers continued searching today for two climbers missing since Wednesday near Juneau, but poor weather conditions are hampering the effort.
Troopers were notified around 10 a.m. Wednesday that 34-year-old George “Ryan” Johnson of Juneau and Marc-Andre Leclerc, 25, of British Columbia, had not returned from climbing the Mendenhall Towers, 21 miles north of Juneau.
The men, reported to be experienced climbers, were dropped off near the Towers on March 4. They had communicated with family and friends on March 5, telling them they had reached the top of the Towers, troopers said. They planned to hike and ski back to Juneau on the West Mendenhall Glacier Trail and be home no later than Wednesday.
Troopers said there was a significant snowstorm in Juneau that day and neither climber had a satellite phone or emergency beacon.
A chartered Coastal Helicopter with Juneau Mountain Rescue and the Coast Guard helped on the search Wednesday. Some of the men’s gear was found, troopers said, but gave no details on the location.
A brief weather window opened Friday allowing a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter with the Juneau team aboard to launch but bad weather forced the aircraft to return before reaching the search area. Poor weather conditions prevented another search on Saturday and again on Sunday, when a National Guard helicopter with a search team aboard tried to check the south face of the Towers.
“No additional clues were located,” troopers said.
The Army National Guard was waiting for an opportunity today to launch its helicopter with a search team aboard to reach the north side of Mendenhall Towers, troopers said. The weather forecast for today in Juneau was for snow and rain.
