March 15, 2018 Police Blotter

Police logged the following calls between 8 a.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. today.
March 14
    A resident reported a loud argument and a child trying to leave the home through the front door. No help was needed when officers responded.
    At 1 p.m. a caller said an intoxicated man was at her apartment, refusing to leave. A second call said he had become violent. The man, who had a .331 PBT, was taken to a hospital.
    At 6:14 p.m. a 911 caller said a man in a red coat sprinted through his yard in the 2100 block of HPR.
    At 7:07 p.m. a man said his 3-year-old daughter was missing after she went to the bathroom. The child was found before officers arrived.
    At 7:29 p.m. a caller said a neighbor was being loud and shouting, after a child screamed playfully. It was not clear whether the adult was shouting at the child. Police were advised.
    At 9:06 p.m. a high school student said an unknown man wouldn’t leave her alone when she asked him to, but he left when other adults showed up.
March 15
    At 12:36 a.m. a caller asked for an ambulance for her brother who had cut hisehand on broken glass from a TV. Police noted other adults in the residence were intoxicated, and helped make arrangements for the juveniles in the house to stay elsewhere.
     
    Sitka Police
    Kayla Merculief, 22, was cited for driving in violation of an instruction permit on Wednesday.

    In Court
    A Sitka grand jury on March 8 indicted Benjamin R. Mitchell, 37, on three counts of burglary in the second degree. Court documents said on Jan. 8 he entered a local restaurant, a fishing lodge and a fish processing plant bunkhouse with the intent to commit the crime of theft or criminal mischief.  The district attorney added misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief in the fifth, theft in the third and theft in the fourth degree. Court documents said in those buildings he removed perishable items from a freezer, moved items around, damaged a ceiling light cover  and stole five bottles of alcohol, and packages of venison. Mitchell was also indicted on March 1 on charges of vehicle theft in the first degree and criminal mischief in the third degree, alleging he stole a vehicle and damaged property Jan. 19.
    On March 8, the grand jury indicted Alec B. Cunningham, 23, on charges of assault in the second and third degrees. Court documents said on Feb. 3 he smashed a pint beer glass in someone’s face.
    The grand jury on March 1 indicted James A. Lysons, 24, on charges of forgery in the second degree and theft in the second degree for allegedly forging a document and obtained someone else’s access device.
    The grand jury on March 1 indicted Jarred A. Davidson, 24, on charges of theft in the second degree for taking a Capital One credit card from another person. The district attorney’s office added misdemeanor counts of fraudulent use of an access device (two counts) and theft in the fourth degree, for using a credit card he know was not valid to purchase $30.16 in items from a local grocery store Aug. 26.
    Jason Svilar, 24, was indicted March 1 by a Sitka grand jury on a charge of vehicle theft in the first degree, which court documents said occurred Feb. 22. The district attorney added a misdemeanor count of violating conditions of release.

    Emergency Calls
   
    Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 1:31 p.m. Wednesday, and 12:36, 6:55 and 10:30 a.m. today.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
