Switching of Power Grids Causes Outage for Some

A power outage primarily affecting customers on Halibut Point Road and Sawmill Creek Road early this morning came during a planned switching of power grids at Blue Lake hydroelectric dam.
“We had three feeders trip during that test,” city electric utility director Brian Bertacchi said. “One of them was HPR north and another that was on Japonski (Island). We are doing some modifications and testing over at Blue Lake on the system that we had scheduled, and that is why we are doing it in the middle of the night, so if something went wrong we wouldn’t impact customers too heavily.”
Some customers experienced the outage from 3:51 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., a press release said.
It was normal testing, which is necessary because of the number of older systems still in use, Bertacchi said.
“We don’t expect anything to go wrong during those tests,” Bertacchi said. “If we have something where we know we will have a known outage we do notify people ahead of time. The probability of an outage on this one was really low, but it did happen.”
Bertacchi stated the outage was not a normal occurance but there have been similar instances in past years.
“We are responsible to maintain a lot of really old equipment,” he said. “So we are constantly doing maintenance work and we don’t have a lot of back-up systems. Because we don’t have the money for back-up systems, it usually does put the active systems in jeopardy.”
Bertacchi said there was no damage to the utilities.
The city thanks customers for their patience and understanding, he added.
