‘Honoring Maritime’
4th of July Theme
“Honoring Maritime: Then and Now” has been chosen as the theme for the 4th of July Parade. The parade will be led by commercial fisherman and philanthropist Mike Mayo of the F/V Coral Lee.
The Board of Directors of the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce made the announcement this week.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 4. It will start on Lake Street and proceed down Lincoln Street toward City Hall. Registration is required to participate in the parade and forms can be picked up at the Sitka Chamber office at 104 Lake Street, or on the Chamber’s website at www.sitkachamber.com. Registrations must be submitted by Friday, June 29.
Organizations or groups conducting community events during the 4th of July festivities – Saturday, June 30-Wednesday, July 4 – can have their event listed in this year’s schedule. A brief description of the event, including start time, location and contact information should be e-mailed to sitkachamber.membership@gmail.com by June 20.
Parade awards will include: Best of Parade; Best of Theme; and Most Enthusiastic.

Memorial Service
For Franklin Roth
A memorial service for Franklin Guiles Roth Jr., longtime Sitka resident, will be 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Presbyterian Church.
Following a short service, a time of fellowship, eating, and sharing of stories planned. All are welcome.
Frank passed away on April 28 and was buried with military honors on May 1 at Sitka National Cemetery.

At UA Fairbanks
The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced the students named to the deans’ and chancellor’s lists for the spring 2018 semester. The lists recognize students’ outstanding academic achievements.
Students receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor’s list, while those receiving a grade point average of between 3.5 and 3.89 are named to the deans’ list.
Ryan Adickes, Trevor Schoening, Raven Shaw and Danika Weaver are on the chancellor’s list.
Dean’s list recipients are Tim Adickes, Hannah Kimber, Evan McArthur, Tad Nelson, Walter Palof and Tristan Van Cise.
Parrent Earns
Medical Degree
Caitlin Parrent, D.P.M., has completed the doctor of podiatric medicine degree at the Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine of Midwestern University, Glendale, Ariz.
An official graduation ceremony was June 1.
Parrent, originally from Sitka, is the daughter of Daniel and Gloria Parrent. She graduated from Sitka High School in 2007, and earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from University of Alaska Anchorage in 2011.
While at Midwestern, she served as class secretary, held positions in podiatric clubs, participated in many philanthropic events, and received multiple scholarships, most notably the 2018 Michael L. Stone, DPM Outstanding Professional Conduct Award. Additionally, Parrent was a member of the Pi Delta Honor Society and graduated with honors.
After graduation, she plans to complete a podiatric residency program at Baylor Scott and White Health in Temple, Texas.
Electric Vehicle
Open House Set
An electric vehicle open house, including a mini-EV fair and photo shoot, will be 3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the UAS-Sitka Campus parking lot.
EV owners and potential owners can meet 3-3:30 p.m. followed by the fair at 3:30 p.m.
EV owners, or those wanting to learn more about EVs, are invited. Free pizza and soft drinks will be served.
Changes Given
To Senior Sales
Tax Exemption
The city will make changes to the senior sales tax exemption beginning July 2018.
Recently, the Assembly voted to change the senior sales tax exemption to the need-based rebate program. Starting July 1, senior citizens will no longer be exempt from paying applicable sales taxes on their purchases. Those 65 and older, and receiving assistance, may be eligible for a rebate. Applications can be submitted to the Finance Department between January 1, 2019 – March 31, 2019. Rebates will then be issued to qualified applicants in July 2019.
