Small Plane Crash Kills 2 Near Sitka
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

The bodies of two men have been recovered from the wreckage of a Sitka-based float plane that crashed sometime over the weekend in Katlian River, about nine miles north of Sitka.
The Coast Guard said they are withholding the release of the victims’ names, pending notification of next of kin.
The white and red PA-18 Super Cub float plane left the Sitka Seaplane Dock Saturday for a planned 20-minute tour of Katlian Bay and Olga Strait, the Coast Guard said. It was reported overdue returning around 10 p.m. Saturday, Coast Guard spokeswoman Charly Hengen said.
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter and the 154-foot fast response Coast Guard cutter Bailey Barco started searching early Sunday morning.
Toward the end of an all-day search the Coast Guard helicopter crew sighted the crashed plane around 10:10 p.m. Sunday near the place that Katlian River enters Katlian Bay.
One of the bodies was recovered from the wreckage Sunday night, but the second man on the plane was not located at the time.
Fire Chief Dave Miller said the Sitka Fire Department search and rescue team contacted the Coast Guard this morning to offer help in the search for the second man, and sent divers, a ground crew and boat operators to join the search. They found the second victim some time before noon today, and Alaska State Troopers brought the body back to town, Hengen said.
During the search, troopers helped with interviews, tracking down leads and coordinating the trained volunteer SAR personnel and assets, said AST spokeswoman Megan Peters. The Coast Guard said the Alaska Air National Guard and Civil Air Patrol also assisted.
State troopers and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the accident, Hengen said.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
