Rockfish Event

At Crescent Harbor

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division will host a rockfish event 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Crescent Harbor shelter to demonstrate examples of release mechanisms, aid in rockfish identification, and explain current and upcoming regulation.

Retention of nonpelagic rockfish by sport anglers is prohibited during  August. Anglers must have a functional deepwater release mechanism on board their vessel regardless of target species and all nonpelagic rockfish caught during August must be released at depth of capture or 100 feet, whichever is shallower.

Releasing rockfish with deepwater release devices will be required by all anglers year-round effective Jan. 1, 2020. 

Barn Dance

On July 4

A community barn dance is slated noon Wednesday, July 4, at the Crescent Harbor Shelter.

Live music will be provided by Sitka’s Fishing for Cats band.

Beginners and seasoned dancers of all ages are invited. Dances are taught and called. No partner is needed and no dancing experience is necessary.

STA Seeking

Tribal Citizens 

Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s next Cultural Resources Committee meeting will be noon June 25 at 205 Baranof Street.

The committee is seeking Tribal elders and leaders to participate in monthly meetings. The committee will discuss upcoming cultural events, concerns, historic preservation, clan history or at.oow.

Author Herring

To Visit Sitka

Old Harbor Books will host an event 6 p.m. Friday, July 20, with Peggy Herring, author of the new historical fiction ‘‘Anna, Like Thunder,’’ based on the true story of the grounding of the 1808 Russian ship St. Nikolai. A brief Q&A will follow the reading.

Offers Activities

Sitka Community School has open registration for several youth activities.

Youth Outdoor Soccer is set June 20-Aug. 1 for ages 4-13. 

Basic Beading for Youths is 1-5 p.m. July 8-12 for ages 8-15, taught by Cass Pook. Students will bead medicine pouches. Basic beading skills will be taught. Beading materials will be provided. The cost is $35 and snacks are included. STA scholarships are available. Adults and teens are welcome to join for free as mentors.

Youth Drum Making is 1-4 p.m. July 15-19 for ages 8-15. It is limited to 10 students and taught by Cass Pook. Students will make and paint a Native drum made of elk hide. The cost is $35 and snacks are included. STA scholarships are available. Adults and teens are welcome to join for free as mentors.

Beatles Topic

Of Story Time

The next preschool story time at Sitka Public Library will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21. ‘‘The Beatles Yellow Submarine’’ will be the theme and the book ‘‘Music Class Today!’’ by David Weinstone is one of the readings.

The program includes rhymes, songs and a craft project. All are welcome.

Paint and Sip

Event June 28

Sitka Seafood Festival will host an interactive paint and sip 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, on the lower level of the Mean Queen. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The $35 admission price will include a canvas, paint, brushes, instruction, a drink of beer or wine, pizza and salad.

Women’s Pistol Clinic

Spots Still Available

The Sitka Sportsman’s Association will host a women’s pistol clinic on the first four Sundays of July at 7 p.m., designed to get shooters more familiar with their pistol and prepare them to compete in the fall women’s pistol league.

The sessions will be a mixture of classroom instruction and live fire practice. Shooters wishing to attend should reserve their spot via email to ramp@gci.net. 

Cost of the clinic will be $20 for all four sessions. All shooters must be a member of the Sitka Sportsman’s Association ($30/year) and have a current shooter’s insurance card ($40/year).

Registration and range familiarity will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27. The range is at 5211 Halibut Point Road, right before the ferry terminal. Anyone with questions should call Steve at 738-7267.

Red, White, Blue

Sale at White E

A red, white and blue sale will begin Wednesday at the White Elephant Shop.

It includes flags, T-shirts, decorations and fabric. Store hours on Wednesday are 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Fishing Closed

In Bear Cove

Bear Cove near Medvejie Hatchery will be closed to sport fishing beginning 12:01 a.m. June 20 through July 31. The closure includes all waters of Bear Cove, east of a line from a point on the Baranof Island shoreline at 57°00.63’ N. latitude, 135°09.80’ W. longitude to a point on the Baranof Island Shoreline at 57°01.07’ N. latitude, 135°09.93’ W. longitude.

King salmon returning to Medvejie Hatchery are not expected to meet the broodstock goal of 4,500 fish in 2018 because of expected harvest and low marine survival. This closure is necessary to provide sufficient numbers of king salmon to meet broodstock needs.

Ryan to Teach

Block Printing

At SJ Museum

The Sheldon Jackson Museum announces artist-in-residence Abel Ryan (Tsimshian) will be creating art at the museum June 30-July 21.

Ryan will be co-hosted by Sitka Fine Arts Camp and spend part of his time teaching students. Several special programs will be part of his residency.

He will teach a free block printing class at the museum 2-3 p.m. Saturday, July 7. The class is free for ages 10 and older and registration is required. To register, call 747-8981.

Ryan will give two artists talks. The first will be “Faces in Wood” 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14. The talk and accompanying Powerpoint presentation will offer an overview of the masks he has carved in the last 15-plus years and the inspiration for some of his work.

Ryan’s second talk will be an artist Recap Talk 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21.  He will show examples of work he created over the course of his time in residence at the museum and artifacts that inspired him.
