6 OK After Boat Floods
By Sentinel Staff
Five adults and a child were rescued by good Samaritan vessels after their 27-foot boat, Marianna, began taking on water Tuesday evening near Long Island, 3 miles south of town, the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter lowered dewatering pumps to nearby vessels which delivered them to the stricken boat. With the flooding controlled by the pumps, the Marianna was towed into Eliason Harbor.
The Coast Guard picked up the Marianna’s mayday call on VHF Channel 16 at 6:17 p.m., reporting the cabin cruiser with six people aboard was taking on water, the Coast Guard said. Three of those aboard, who were wearing life jackets, were placed in a raft and picked up by a nearby vessel, Poseidon, while the other three passengers stayed on the Marianna.
Before the helicopter arrived, another boat responding to the mayday call, Stingray, took the Marianna under tow, planning to beach it on Long Island if necessary. After the flooding was controlled another good Samaritan vessel, F/V Garnet, towed the boat on in to Eliason Harbor.
In all, the Coast Guard said, the rescue involved the Coast Guard helicopter, four good Samaritan vessels and the Fire Department’s Emergency Response Vessel.
