Girl Found in Good Condition After Kayak Upset
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

A 13-year-old girl who went missing Tuesday afternoon when her kayak overturned at Shelikof Bay was found unharmed on shore a few hours later, the Coast Guard said.
A search helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka located the girl some distance away from the area where her kayak had capsized. Witnesses on shore called the Sitka police at 1:30 p.m., and in turn the police notified the Coast Guard and Fire Department’s search and rescue squad and divers.

The girl was on a camping trip with relatives at the North Beach cabin on Kruzof Island, police said. She was kayaking in the bay with family members when the boat overturned. She was wearing a life jacket, and when the people on shore last saw her she was swimming toward shore in the surf.
At 3:10 p.m. the helicopter crew spotted her on some rocks on shore a few miles south of the North Beach cabin. A rescue swimmer was lowered, and helped as she was hoisted in the basket.
The girl wasn’t injured and showed no sign of hypothermia, so the helicopter delivered her to her family at the North Beach cabin.
“Even on a beautiful day the water temperature can be life threatening,” Lt. Mick Klakring, the Coast Guard pilot, said in a news release. “Thankfully this young lady was wearing a life jacket which may have made the difference in the outcome. We are very happy we could find her and relocate her with family at staying at Shelikof Bay to enjoy the Fourth of July.”
Family members said they were grateful to all who helped.
The teen’s mother, Richelle Henning Murphy, said on Sitka Chatters: “Special thanks to the Sitka Police Department, Search & Rescue and the Coast Guard. So appreciative for your fast response in our time of need. You all are wonderful!” Alene Henning, grandmother of the teen, added: “We are still rejoicing over Ceanna’s recovering from her episode in kayak yesterday - we all learned what awesome recovery teams Sitka has ...”
The police department said the outcome was favorable because the girl was wearing a life jacket, and the life jacket fit properly. A second kayak with two adult family members aboard also overturned around the same time, and the two helped look for the teen in the water, and eventually swam to shore, police said.
It was one of three calls the Coast Guard responded two over the past two days.
On Wednesday afternoon, a Coast Guard helicopter picked up a 47-year-old hiker on the east face of Mt. Edgecumbe after he fell behind his group and was suffering from heat exhaustion.
He was hoisted into the helicopter and flown to Sitka, where he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Also on Wednesday afternoon, Air Station Sitka launched a helicopter in response to a call from the vessel Dutch Lady 14 miles north of Petersburg reporting a 71-year-old man on board had suffered a heart attack.
A nearby cruise ship, Wilderness Discoverer, heard the VHF Channel 16 call from the Dutch Lady and sent a medical team to help while the Coast Guard was en route. The patient was transferred onto the helicopter, with the help of the cruise ship’s medical team, and was flown to Sitka where an awaiting ambulance took him to the hospital, the Coast Guard said.
