Washington Volunteers Serve Sitka Lutheran

Sandra and Doug Drees, residents of Tumwater, Washington, will serve Sitka Lutheran Church as volunteers this month.

Having enjoyed a cruise to Alaska they have fallen in love with the beauty of the state and wished to return while performing Christian service at Sitka Lutheran Church and helping out the community by being a friendly face for tourists who come to Sitka.

After serving 22 years in the U.S. Navy as a senior aircraft maintenance supervisor, Doug Drees moved his family back to the Olympia/Tumwater region in 1978. He began working for Boeing as a quality assurance inspector. Since then, he has enjoyed teaching aircraft welding at local high schools.

Sandra Drees was mom and dad while Doug was in the Navy, but, upon his retirement she worked for Big Brothers Big Sisters and as a Christian church administrator.

Since retiring both have been even more active in their Lutheran congregation with church building maintenance, singing in the choir, serving Communion to the homebound, and helping with Vacation Bible School.

The Drees say they’re are happy to serve Sitka Lutheran during the busy tourist season. Cleaning bathrooms, answering questions, vacuuming floors, selling popcorn are tasks that they welcome.

They will help with garage sales for Youth Mission Travel, explain Sitka Lutheran’s rich Finnish-Lutheran history to tourists and care for the historic Lutheran Cemetery.

Regular Sunday morning worship services are held at 10:30 a.m.  Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. a weekly soup supper is held in the church followed by a short prayer service. Youth group, quilting and monthly Messy Church services round out a few of the activities of Sitka Lutheran Church.

For more information call the church office at 747-3338, visit the church’s web site at: http://www.sitkalutheranchurch.org/ or e-mail the office at sitkalutheranchurch@gmail.com.
