Family Activities

Set for STA Citizens

Strengthening Families through Healthy Activities will offer several activities this summer for Tribal citizens, STA employees and their families.

Open swims are 5-6 p.m. on Saturdays at Blatchley pool. Scheduled days  are July 21, 28, Aug. 4, 11, 18, 24, Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Open gym with skating and yoga is offered 1-3 p.m. every Sunday through August at Blatchley Middle School.

Parents and guardians must attend with their children.

Tickets on Sale for

Kruzof Boat Trip

Tickets are available to the public for beachcombing on Kruzof Island and wildlife viewing on an Allen Marine boat.

The Paths Across the Pacific-sponsored event is 7:30 a.m.-noon Sunday, July 22. The boat will load at Crescent Harbor at 7 a.m.

The cost is $55 and includes breakfast, coffee tea, hot chocolate. Other beverages are available for purchase.

Tickets are available, for cash only, at Paths Across the Pacific conference registration desk at Centennial Hall, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 19 and 20.

 

Fiber Friends

Meet Saturday

Fiber Friends will meet noon-2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Gus Adams Room in the Sitka Public Library. Attendees can take items for show and tell and ideas for a display in the library in August.

Audio Storytelling

Event on July 20

Sitka Fellow in Residence Lila Cherneff will lead a workshop on audio storytelling 8:15-9:15 p.m. July 20 at the Yaw Art Center on the SJ Campus.

The class is part of her residency July 15-Aug. 2 with the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

Events for registered participants will include workshops on Northwest Coast design and field sketching; and excursions to explore the land and sea around Sitka.

An evening lecture and concert series is open to the public each night at 7 p.m. with a $5 suggested donation.

Cherneff is a multimedia producer. Her work uses interactive mediums to tell stories about education, class and mental health. She was a 2016 fellow with the documentary unit of American Public Media, APM Reports.

Her work has been featured on podcasts and media outlets including 99% Invisible, Unfictional, Narrative.ly and Educate. Lila is currently a George Osher Scholar at Brown University. While in Sitka for a residency July 15-Aug. 13, she will be working on completing a series of five interactive, multimedia stories about landscape and healing.

Storytelling Classes

Offered by Fellows

Sitka Fellows will host storytelling workshops Friday, July 20, at the Yaw Art Center on the SJ Campus.

 

Anna Dawson will teach visual storytelling through illustration 7-8 p.m. and Lila Cherneff will teach ‘‘Audio Storytelling: Podcasting Basics’’ 8:15-9:15 p.m. The workshops are free of charge and designed for teens and adults. For information, call Sitka Fine Arts Camp at 747-3085.

 

Students Learn

To Fillet Salmon

The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen will offer a class in conjunction with the Sitka Seafood Festival 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 505 Sawmill Creek Road.

Chef Renée Jakaitis Trafton of Beak Restaurant will teach students how to fillet a salmon. It includes lessons on how to remove the pinbones from the salmon and how to remove the skin.

The Sitka Seafood Festival is providing fish for the class. The registration cost is $30, which includes a new fillet knife for every student.

 

The registration deadline is 11:55 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. Registration is capped at 10 students.
