The following calls came in by 8 a.m. today:
July 19
A woman was reported to have medical issues. She refused treatment.
Officers talked to a man found sleeping near the Crescent Park gazebo. He packed up and left.
At 10:56 a.m. a man reported his son was charged by a bear near the second bridge of the Indian River trail. The son fired a warning shot, and the bear ran off, police were told. The son also advised others on the trail of the bear but no other reports were received.
A caller said his son’s Specialized bike was stolen from Peterson Street.
A man accidentally dropped his military ID off the Coast Guard dock.
Possible bear activity was reported at Halibut Point Recreation Area, with garbage strewn about.
A woman said a caller claiming to be from the city told her she owed $250. She called the number provided and paid, she said. Police told her it was a scam and advised her of options.
At 4 p.m. a caller said a dog she was watching was loose on Lake Street.
At 7:14 p.m. a man reported rummaging through boats near Eagle Beach was gone when police arrived. A fishing pole was among missing items.
At 10:34 p.m. a caller said a woman returned to a bar after being told to stay away. She left before police arrived.
At 11 p.m. campers said a bear walked near a tent and headed to the beach at the Sitka Sportsman’s Association building. It knocked over something large and metal, they said. Police checked the area.
At 11:49 p.m. a 911 caller reported strange noises coming from as alley in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. Police talked to a woman, who said she had been talking and would be quieter.
In Court
Helen C. Kennedy, 30, was sentenced to one day for disorderly conduct (creating a hazardous condition). Dismissed were charges of assault in the fourth degree and criminal mischief in the fifth.
Shane M. Alexander, 32, was sentenced to three days and fined $1,000 for reckless driving. He was charged originally with driving under the influence but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. His license is revoked for 90 days, and he will be on probation for a year. He is to complete treatment.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department got ambulance calls at 8 a.m., 8:24 a.m., 1:18 p.m., 1:37 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday.
Coast Guard
The Coast Guard Air Station Sitka early today dispatched a helicopter to search the area of Moira Rock, after a flare was spotted around 12:25 a.m. The Coast Guard received no reports of boats or people in distress by press time.
Moira Rock is located on the southeast coast of Prince of Wales Island.
Sitka Presbyterian Fellowship will meet 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 22, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.
