S.E. Troll Fishery

To Close, Will

Reopen to Kings

Southeast Alaska trollers will be given another chance to target king salmon this summer.

The troll fishery will close from 11:59 p.m. Aug. 9 to 12:01 a.m. Aug. 15, when it will reopen to the taking of all salmon – including Chinook.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced that king salmon will be retained until closed by emergency order. Trollers harvested 57,000 treaty king salmon during the first summer opening, leaving an estimated 22,000 (including a 4 percent Alaska hatchery component) to harvest during the second. Areas of high king abundance will remain closed.

Trollers may target chum salmon during the closure in Neets Bay (101-90), Sitka Sound (113-41) and Crawfish Inlet (113-33). Cohos must be offloaded prior to resuming fishing in the chum salmon areas as defined.

During the closure period, trolling will remain open to all species in Anita Bay and Nakat Inlet. In the Deep Inlet THA, trolling will be open to retention of all species, according to the rotational schedule announced April 4. King and coho salmon harvested in THAs listed above must be offloaded prior to trolling outside THA boundaries during the coho closure.

The Hidden Falls THA (112-22) will be open to troll retention of all species except kings during the closure.

For information about the project, contact the Public Works Department at 747-1883 or K&E Alaska Inc. at 747-3838.

The goat harvest quota was of two males or one female, and as of Monday, one male goat has been reported harvested. With hunters currently in the field and the accessibility of goats in this zone, the emergency order was issued.

Portions of Unit 4 not affected by this emergency order will remain open until harvest quotas are reached or the season concludes.
