Sullivan to Visit Sitka, Confer with City, C.G.
By Sentinel Staff
U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan will be in town Saturday with the commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Adm. Karl Shultz, and other high-ranking officials for a tour of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka.
During his time in Sitka, Sullivan will also visit with Deputy Mayor Steven Eisenbeisz and City Administrator Keith Brady for a review of what city community affairs director Maegan Bosak said would be the city’s legislative priorities and “shovel-ready” projects that need funding.
Those include support for full funding for Secure Rural Schools and Payment in Lieu of Taxes; converting federal facilities to electric heat; property for a new seaplane base; federal highway funds for the ferry system; airport terminal improvements; Green Lake hydro overhaul; street improvements; and an electrical substation for Marine Street.
The administrator also plans to talk to Sullivan about changing federal water quality regulations that are adding substantially to the city’s infrastructure costs, such as the required water filtration plant and an alternative drinking water source.
“We also always have long discussions over any possible federal grant funding opportunities,” Bosak said.
Sullivan will visit the Coast Guard Air Station in the afternoon accompanied by Adm. Shultz, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Matthew Bell, commandant of the 17th District (Alaska); and Coast Guard Vice Admiral Linda Fagan, Pacific Area commander, based in Alameda, Calif.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
