Sitka Man Charged In Arson, Kidnapping

Police arrested a Sitka man on arson, kidnapping and assault charges this morning after he allegedly set his house on fire, and drove off with his wife and two children, police said.
Joshua M. Roman, 29, was scheduled to be arraigned today for kidnapping, arson in the first degree, assault in the third degree-domestic violence, and failing to stop at the direction of a police officer.
Officers received a 911 call at 5:40 a.m. today reporting Roman had set fire to his house in the 2000 block of Sawmill Creek Road, and had driven off with his wife and two children. He was spotted by an officer near Roman’s house, and police believed he was returning home, Sitka Police Lt. Lance Ewers said.
The criminal complaint said when Roman didn’t stop at his house, police tried to pull him over, but Roman refused, and continued driving out Sawmill Creek Road and onto Blue Lake Road. At the end of the road near the dam, Roman turned around and drove toward the officer before driving into a ditch. He was able to get the car out, and continued driving down Blue Lake Road when he was blocked from escaping by another officer in a patrol car. A “felony stop” was performed “with guns drawn,” the police said in the complaint.
Roman was pulled out of the car, and arrested without incident. Police found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the front seat, Ewers said.
A neighbor put out the fires inside the house before police and fire departments arrived in response to the call. Damage was observed to walls, floor and appliances as well as property, of more than $1,000, the police report said.
Roman was being held without bail pending his arraignment at 2:30 p.m. today.
The investigation is continuing, Ewers said.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
