Police Blotter
    The following calls were received by police by 8 a.m. today:
October 9
    At 8 a.m. a caller reported she’d just scared off a bear that was digging through her garbage on Cedar Beach Road.
    At 8:19 a.m. a caller at City Hall told police he wanted to sign a criminal trespass order against a man who’d just been in his office being verbally abusive and threatening.
    A scrap yard employee told police a vehicle had been left in the lot across the street sometime during the past week. An officer spoke with the owner, who said his father allowed some “kids” to take it and junk it. The officer advised the owner the vehicle was still his responsibility and to have it properly junked. The owner provided his father’s information.
    At 10:54 a.m. a caller reported the theft of seven checks and $100 in cash from a Katlian Street business.
    A caller asked for a welfare check on a student who hasn’t been at school and the parents couldn’t be contacted. Dispatch talked to the grandmother, who said the student was home sick. She was reminded the school needed to be called when the child was going to be staying home.
    An abandoned boat was reported at Starrigavan overflow parking on HPR.
    A caller said several trucks had been parked for at least the last three days on the edge of his property on Katherine Benson Drive. He said the trucks were full of junk and he didn’t remember seeing them in the area before.
    A caller said his iPad mini had been stolen from the library last week.
    At 3 p.m. a caller on Shuler Drive said a bear appeared to have dragged some trash up the hill behind her house early in the morning. She said there were no signs the bear was there currently, but noted a sow and a cub had been there a week ago.
    A caller said she hadn’t seen her niece in several days and her social media page had had no posts since Sunday.
    At 5 p.m. a caller said a relative had told him she was going to sell some medication. Officers met with her and seized the medications.
    At 7:24 p.m. a caller said a driver had pulled into a trailer court in the 1700 block of HPR, and scanned the area with a flashlight. The vehicle was leaving by the time the caller got  up and he couldn’t see which direction it was going.
    At 8:07 p.m. a caller said she’d heard that a neighbor had seen two males walking around her trailer with flashlights, in the 1700 block of HPR. An officer talked to those involved and found no signs of suspicious persons in the area.
    At 10:14 p.m. a caller said he believes a kid ran into something in a Jeep Wrangler then took off on foot. Officers and the caller checked the area and didn’t locate anyone.
   

Sitka Police

    Robert Lee Hughes, 31, was charged with violating conditions of release early this morning. Police said he blew a PBT of .432 and was taken to a hospital.

Emergency Calls
    Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday and 1:01 a.m. today.

Divorces
    Kenneth Arnold Winger and Rebekah Wright Winger were granted a divorce in September.
    Nicholas Paul Bryant and Megan Elizabeth Hamilton were granted a diorce in August.
    Allison Paige Ball and Trevor Aaron Pruitt were granted a divorce Oct. 9.

Marriages
    The following couples applied for marriage licenses during September:
    Dennis Raymond Backstrom and Dana Kay Mitchell.
    Evan Robert Love and Lauren Ann Wild.
    Daniel Grant Smith and Tia Michelle Brown.
    Samuel Thorvilson and Rachel Donkersloot.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
