One Injured In Bus Crash
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

A passenger on a Sitka Ride bus suffered minor injuries Friday evening in a downtown collision that left the bus and the other vehicle heavily damaged, police said.
Emergency medical crews, firefighters and police were dispatched to the intersection of Harbor Drive and Harbor Way around 5:52 p.m. Friday after receiving a number of calls reporting the accident. Police Lt. Lance Ewers said it appears an SUV was exiting the Harbor Way parking lot and struck the side of the bus just after it turned right from Harbor Drive.
The SUV appeared to be a total loss, Ewers said. The bus sustained heavy damage to the door area, making it necessary to extract the 10 passengers through the emergency door in the rear. A passenger who was thrown from her seat was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was released the following day, Ewers said.
The accident required police to close Harbor Way – the loop that goes behind the Lincoln Street stores – for about an hour while the area was cleaned up and officers investigated the scene, the lieutenant said.
The investigation of the accident is ongoing. Ewers said he wanted to give a “shout out” to the Mean Queen restaurant owner, Mary Magnuson, for offering her building to the police and fire crews for interviewing witnesses and evaluating people for possible injuries.
“It was so nice, and kind and helpful,” Ewers said.
