Bear, Cub Killed Near HPR Home

Sitka officers shot and killed a bear and her cub in the early morning hours today after the bears entered a shed where deer were hanging and then tried to get into the owner’s home.
Police received a call at 2:59 a.m. from a resident at Vennetti’s Trailer Court reporting a sow and cub were eating a deer he had hung. The resident called back soon afterward saying the bears were scratching at his house, according to the dispatch report.
Lt. Lance Ewers said two officers went to the area, ran the lights and siren to try to scare the bears away, and also fired a nonlethal “hazing round.”
“Nothing worked, the bears would not leave,” he said. “They wouldn’t go away, they wouldn’t run away, they kept staying in the area.”
This qualified the incident for action under the Defense of Life and Property rule that allows the killing of wild animals actively menacing people or property, Ewers said.
The two officers were able to get the bears into an area away from the homes in order to kill them using a large caliber bear hunting rifle and 12-gauge shotgun. The skull and skin were removed, in accordance with the DLP rules. After wildlife centers in Sitka turned down the offer of the meat, the carcasses were taken to the transfer station for disposal, Ewers said.
Ewers said it was a difficult situation, and officers made the right call.
“If we did not take lethal action both property and life would be in jeopardy,” he said.
