Canoe Rides at

Sealing Cove

Sitka Tribe of Alaska has announced a change of venue for canoe rides on Saturday.

Depending on weather, rides will be offered 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Sealing Cove.

Senior Exemption

Reinstated by City

The senior sales tax exemption has been reinstated, the city said.

Any person, 65 years of age or older, who is a resident of Alaska, may show their previously issued sales tax exemption card to receive the exemption from paying sales tax on the purchase of goods, services, or rentals for personal use or consumption.

Those who longer ones have their card or are newly eligible, can stop by City Hall on the second floor 11 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays to apply for one. A $25 fee will apply to all new applications and a $5 fee for replacement cards. Any person who has yet to obtain a city Sales Tax Exemption Card may continue to use their state-issued identification through the end of November. Contact the finance department at 747-1840 with any questions.

 

Art Activity Set

At SJ Museum

The Sheldon Jackson Museum will host an At Saxan Art Activity 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. Children ages 6-10 will make Inupiaq ulus using cardboard, tinfoil, and acrylic paints and look at the ulus on exhibit in the museum gallery. 

To register a child, call 747-8981.

At Saxan traditionally is one Saturday a month at the museum and is family-friendly, free of charge, and sponsored by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum. Children will make a craft or work of art and learn about Alaska Native cultures and peoples. 

The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for general visitors, $4 for seniors, and free for ages 18 and under.

 

Admission will be waived for the At Saxan art activity. Call 747-8981 with any questions about the museum’s programming. 

New Hours at

Science Center

The Sitka Sound Science Center has new weekday winter hours. Those wanting to visit any day of the week can call 24 hours in advance to schedule an appointment.

Set open times are 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. Additionally, the Lunch at the Aquarium is 11:45 a.m. Tuesdays, where personnel will feed the big tank and participants have the chance to hand-feed the sea urchins. Admission is $5, or free to members. For more information about hours or how to become a member, call Sandy at 747-8878, extension 16.

 

Hospital Auxiliary

Meets Wednesday

The Sitka Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual meeting noon Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the classroom on the lower level.

Members can get a free lunch at the Basement Bistro. The agenda includes an update from administration, update on the gift counter, membership dues and planning the Christmas party for the long-term care residents.

 

White E Meeting

The White Elephant Shop monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Swan Lake Senior Center. Meetings are open to the public.

 

Turkey Shoot

Set for Nov. 17

Sitka Sportsman’s Association will hold its annual turkey shoot 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at 5211 Halibut Point Road.

No experience is necessary and non-members are invited to participate.

Contestants hitting a random white clay target during a round of trap or skeet will win. In the indoor .22 pistol event, contestants get five shots at a special turkey target and the top score of every 5 shooters will win. Winners choose either a turkey or a coupon for a free round of trap or skeet. There is a limit of one turkey or coupon per shooter. 

The cost to shoot is $15 per round of trap or skeet and $5 per pistol event. Both fees include ammunition. Loaner shotguns and pistols will be available for use at no charge.

Sitka Sportsman’s Association is a non-profit organization and its member volunteers continue to provide range activities to the community. For information call Mike Johnson at 752-7900.

 

Elks Dinner to

Benefit Gymnastics

The Elks Lodge will host a dinner 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, to benefit the Sitka Gymnastics Academy. A dessert auction is planned. Hamburgers and fries will be served.

All events held at the Elks Lodge are for members and invited guests.

 

Tlingit & Haida

Event Wednesday

The Sitka Chapter of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska Central Council will welcome Valerie Hillman, program compliance office from Central Council, for an enrollment and address update event 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the ANB Founders Hall.

Those who are eligible to enroll or need to update their address are encouraged to attend. Light snacks, beverages and a drawing for door prizes are planned. For information call Rachel Moreno, 738-6595.

 

Chamber to Meet

Brit Galanin and Alana Peterson will address the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

The topic will be ‘‘Why Startups are Good for the Economy.’’

The public is invited to attend.

 

Fiber Friends

Meets Saturday

Fiber Friends will meet noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in the Gus Adams room at the Sitka Public Library.

 

Attendees can take items for show and tell, and a jar for Orvus Paste.  Weavers, spinners dyers and others working with fiber are invited. For information contact Alice at 747-3931.

 

SFS, Coliseum

To Screen Doc

‘Science Fair’

The Sitka Film Society and Coliseum Theater will present the documentary “Science Fair” noon Sunday at the Coliseum Theater

The film follows nine high school students from around the globe as they navigate rivalries, setbacks and, of course, hormones, on their journey to compete at The International Science and Engineering Fair. 

“Science Fair” won the documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival. Variety magazine called it, “Supremely entertaining. An ode to the teenage science geeks on whom our future depends.”

Tickets are $8 at Old Harbor Books.

 

 

CPR, Heart Saver

Class on Nov. 16
