Police Blotter

    Police received the following calls as of 8 a.m. today:
November 16
    Officers assisted a man who said he was homeless.
    A caller said a student hadn’t been at school for two days. The mother told police he was away, visiting his dad.
    A caller reported the theft of about $1,000 worth of leather clothing.
    Police received a DVO to serve.
    A bus company said a sedan passed a bus while its red lights were flashing, at SMC and Jarvis Street.
    An officer said a man at Crescent Harbor shelter was highly intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital, where he was reported being combative. After officers arrived, he calmed down.
    At 9:12 p.m. three men were seen passing a bottle around in the 700 block of Lincoln. Officers confiscated a bottle of whisky and told a man he’d be cited if caught drinking in public again.
November 17
    At 12:21 a.m. a woman said a man was refusing to leave her home, where he also was living. The two told officers they had been arguing. They agreed to  go to separate parts of the home for the night. She later reported she thought he was threatening her. Officers again spoke to the two, and separated them.
    At 5:29 a.m. a caller said a friendly, fluffy tabby cat was trying to get into his screened window, on Lake Street.
    A woman said a caller told her someone had been selling items from her storage unit on Jarvis Street.
    At 10:35 a.m. a caller said a man in a wheelchair and a woman appeared to be smoking marijuana downtown.  Officers were unable to find the two.
    A caller said human excrement and other items were left at their back door on Lake Street.
    At 2:44 p.m. a caller on Monastery Street said a man was behaving strangely, hiding by mailboxes.
    At 11:40 p.m. a fight was reported in a downtown bar.  Officers talked to one man, who didn’t want to press charges. The second man told police later he didn’t want to press charges, either.
November 18
    The JPO asked for help taking a juvenile to the airport, because the youth has a history of assaults.
    At 12:33 p.m. a man who’d been sleeping all morning in a food court was taken to the hospital due to his level of intoxication.
    At 4 p.m. a caller reported a fire near the Japonski work float. Police found it was trash from a fast food restaurant.
    Fish and Wildlife troopers responded to a report of a man dragging a deer out of the woods that he had found dead with its horn stuck in something.
    At 7:21 p.m. a woman said she’d left her purse inside a business and it had been stolen.
    A man said he’d parked his truck behind a bar the previous night and his son’s bike was stolen out of it.
    A caller said she told  her daughter she couldn’t stay in the house anymore, and now was worried she might try to harm herself. The woman called later to say the daughter was safe.
November 19
    At 12:59 a.m. a resident reported seeing a black dog that looked like it may have been injured, at Katlian and Kaagwaantaan Street. No dogs were around when police checked.

    In Court
    John R. McKee, 33, was sentenced to 30 days, suspended, for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the fourth degree. He was sentenced to 24 months, with 18 suspended, for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree. He was sentenced to 30 days, with 27 suspended, and fined $1,500 for driving under the influence. He is to complete counseling and his license is revoked for 90 days. He will be on probation for two years, and is not to possess drugs or paraphernalia. Dismissed were charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third and fourth degree (three counts), and violating release conditions (two counts).

    Sitka Police
    Mark B. Manuel, 31, was charged Friday with driving under the influence, reckless driving and refusal to give a breath test.
    Ricky  A. Armstrong, 48, was charged Friday night with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
    Gabriel S. Vanveen, 16, was cited Friday night for driving in violation of an instructional permit.
    Jacob Serka, 16, and Lucas Arnold, 16, both were cited late Friday with driving in violation of a provisional license.
    Walter L. Boyd, 35, was cited Sunday for open container and public consumption of marijuana.

    Grand Jury

    A Sitka grand jury on Thursday indicted Charles R. Kassinger, 22, on a charge of assault in the third degree after he allegedly “recklessly caused physical injury to another person ... by means of a dangerous instrument, specifically, his arms and hands,” in late September or early October.
    Luke Vroman, 32, was indicted Thursday on three charges of theft in the second degree. Court documents said on Sept. 12 he committed the crime of theft by using someone else’s credit cards without permission.

    Emergency Calls
    Sitka Fire Department received one ambulance call on Friday, three on Saturday, one on Sunday and one today.

    Hunter Found

    A hunter was found in “overall good health” after he failed to be at a pickup point Saturday and spent the night in the rain on Kosciusko Island, near Prince of Wales Island, troopers said.
    Troopers were called at 1:30 p.m. Saturday about the missing hunter. Searchers looked until dark without success, and a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter was deployed but was unable to find the man due to poor visibility, troopers said.
    On Sunday, a trooper and about 15 volunteers from Naukati and Edna Bay found the hunter late Sunday morning.  He was given a ride to Naukati by boat.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
