For John Everson

Longtime resident John Everson passed away peacefully Dec. 31, 2018, in Seattle after an illness. He was 68.

Services are planned Jan. 19 or 20.

 

GSAC/SCT Present

Broadway Night

The Greater Sitka Arts Council’s Sitka Community Theater will present Broadway Night 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Odess Theater on the SJ Campus.

Broadway Night is an evening of showtunes sung by local celebrities and friends, with at least one dance number in the mix. Andrew Hames is the emcee for the evening.

Tickets are $40, which includes wine and appetizers. Doors open at 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the upcoming SCT spring play “9 to 5.”

 

Preschoolers

Get Story Time

Preschool story time at Sitka Public Library will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

‘‘We March’’ by Shane W. Evans, a book featuring a story about the African American Civil Rights movement, will be one of the readings. The program includes rhymes, songs and a craft project. All are welcome. For information call the library at 747-8708.

 

Babies and Books

Event Jan. 26

Babies and Books will host the monthly program at Sitka Public Library 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26.

“Fun with Forests” is the theme. The event will include readings with T.J. Witherspoon and hands-on early literacy activities for babies and toddlers. Everybody is welcome.

Jesse S. Lantiegne, a sophomore in business administration at Oregon State University, Corvallis, was named to the scholastic honor roll fall term.

Deadline to Apply to the Alaska Native Artist Residency Program Extended

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum has extended the deadline for Alaska Native artists to apply to the Native Artist Residency program. The new deadline to submit an application is Jan. 10.

The program starts in May and ends in October.

Several residency positions are available. All involve working at the museum and include artist stipends of $2,200, a food per diem to offset food costs, lodging, and travel to and from Sitka.

Several of the residencies involve working with youths and two of them involve working nearly half of the time at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, adjacent to the Sheldon Jackson Museum and the other half of the time at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. All residencies are 22 days. Dates are: May 15-June 5 (may involve working with youths under 18 for several days in the museum gallery); June 7-29 (involves working at the museum and working with Sitka Fine Arts Camp middle school students); June 29-July 20 (involves working at the museum and with Sitka Fine Arts Camp high school students); Aug. 22-Sept. 12; and Sept. 14-Oct. 5.

Artists-in-residence may focus on traditional or contemporary Native art forms including but not limited to wood carving, ivory carving, silver engraving, beading, skin, gut and fish skin sewing, drum making, and basket or textile weaving, drumming, and dancing.

Event on Tuesday

To Honor Sitkan

All are invited to attend a brief ceremony to install an embroidery project at Baranof Elementary School 5:45 p.m. Jan. 15.

The embroidery was completed by Nancy Ricketts to celebrate and honor her 23 years of reading with Sitka first-graders.

The project uses a replica of Aladdin’s lamp, which has become a universal symbol of both education and the spirit of learning.

 

Light refreshments will be served. Ricketts is especially inviting students who were read to or who read to her over the years. For more information call 747-5941.

SOS Lifeline

Group to Meet

Sitka Outreach and Support: Lifeline group will meet 2-3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Peter’s See House.

PFD Assist Hours

Slated at LIO

The online PFD application is available to be filled out on any computer or smart phone and signed electronically.

Legislative Information Officers cannot fill out applications for individuals if they can type or write on their own.

Staff can help with questions and will assist with PFD applications 2-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Legislative Issues

Alaska’s next legislative session begins on Jan. 15. The Legislative Information Office is non-partisan support to help individuals understand and participate in their state government; tracking issues or specific bills, messages to legislators and testimony at hearings.

Celebration Set

For Fish Tank

Baranof Elementary School invites  families to its Fish Tank Celebration 5:45-6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Included will be a short fish brigade to return the fish to the tank, a quick art installation, and a hot dog feed for the family. Gluten-free and turkey dog options will be available.

 

Dance Workshop

Set for Sunday

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present a free weekend dance workshop with professional dancer Tommy Scrivens 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Odess Theater on the SJ Campus.

‘‘Push your skills and broaden your dance horizons with this half-day workshop where you will learn the latest dance styles straight off of the Broadway stages,’’ organizers said.

A blend of styles including jazz, theater dance, and contemporary will work for those with dance experience. Admission is free.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
