Braves Fall in OT to Mariners

By KLAS STOLPE
Sentinel Staff Writer
The long holiday break is over and the Mt. Edgecumbe High School boys basketball team went the distance, and a bit extra as junior Jonathan Constantine (Tok) hit a buzzer beater to force overtime in a 70-63 road loss to Homer on Thursday.
“No excuses,” Young said. “Homer came out and got after us.”
After opening the game with seniors Emmett Dunaway (Dillingham) and Bear Brown (Anchorage), Constantine, and sophomores Leon Toomer (Kotzebue) and Jeff Adams (Mentasta) all finding the score book in the first quarter while holding Homer to just 7 points, Mt. Edgecumbe looked like their 9-7 lead would build for another eight minutes to the break.

Instead Homer’s Stanley Swoboda found his touch, matching the 12 points the Braves put up in the second stanza and giving the Mariners the lead 27-21 at the half.
“We did not compete the way I felt we should have,” Young said. “Homer played well and we didn’t.”
Mt. Edgecumbe matched Homer shot for shot in the third quarter, with Constantine hitting twice from outside the 3-point line and Brown and Dunaway keeping the Mariners’ defense honest inside. The Braves also started to increase their defensive intensity, harassing the Mariners full court.
“We did have some success in the second half when we pressed,” Young said. “There were a few spots in the game we were able to go on quick 8-0 and 7-0 runs that helped us get back in the game.”
Swoboda added a deep shot for the Mariners and Ethan Anderson and Japheth McGhee spread out the Braves’ defense to keep Homer on top 51-39 with just eight minutes to go.
The Braves had their best effort of the season in the fourth quarter, with seven of the eight players combining for 22 points, including Constantine and Toomer from deep, and so. RJ Alstrom-Beans (St. Mary’s) and Dunaway scoring 4 each. Mt. Edgecumbe’s scrappy defense slowed the Mariners to a still healthy output of 10 points. Mt. Edgecumbe sr. Cyprian Johnson-Edwards (Emmonak) hit the boards, pulling down five offensive and four defensively, to give the Braves multiple second chance shots.

“We need to shoot free throws better,” Young said. “That has hurt us a few times this year already. Cyprian did a very good job getting offensive rebounds from missed free throws and I thought RJ gave us some good minutes last night. We had some spurts, overall, where every one played well.”
Trailing 61-58 the Mt. Edgecumbe spirit shown through as Constantine found a inch of free real estate on the court and launched a shot from beyond the arch that tied the game at 61-61.
“In overtime we just went flat,” Young said. “We hit the big shot to force overtime and just came out flat. Not sure how to explain it. Was hoping that would give us a spark but we couldn’t finish.”
Mt. Edgecumbe’s Dunaway hit the Braves’ only shot in the extra time, and Alstrom-Beans and Brown fouled out while the Mariners’ Swoboda, Knapp and McGhee combined to hit 5-8 from the line and Swoboda and jr. Daniel Reutov hold on for the 70-63 win.

Constantine led the Braves with 15 points; Brown added 11; Dunaway 10; Alstrom-Beans 9; Johnson-Edwards and Toomer 5 apiece; jr. David Dock (Togiak) and Adams 4 apiece.
Swoboda led the Mariners with 22 points, McGhee 14, Anderson 13, Reutov and sr. Seth Adkins 7 apiece, so. Clayton Beachy 6, and E. Knapp 4.
Mt. Edgecumbe went 9-20 at the charity stripe, Homer 16-30. The Braves hit four shots from beyond the arch, three of them by Constantine. The Mariners hit just 2 shots from deep, both by Swoboda.
Mt. Edgecumbe plays at Soldotna on Saturday.
“Hopefully we learn from our mistakes, have a good practice today and compete better tomorrow against Soldotna,” Young said.
The MEHS Lady Braves play at Ketchikan tonight and Saturday.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
