Life Celebration

For Mark Short

A gathering in celebration of the life of Mark Short, 63, will be 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Short died early Feb. 2 in Sealing Cove Harbor.

 

Open Mic Slated

Sitka Folk and the Greater Sitka Arts Council present an open mic at Beak Restaurant on Sunday, Feb. 24. Sign up for performers starts at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Rep. Kreiss-Tomkins

Office Hours Slated

State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins will hold public office hours on Saturday, Feb. 23. He will be at the BackDoor from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and at the Highliner, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Job Available

Sitka National Historical Park is accepting applications for a permanent, full-time, park ranger GS-11 to serve as a senior interpretive specialist. Application packets are on the door at 103 Monastery Street, at the visitor center information desk or by contacting the park superintendent at 747-0111. Applications must be postmarked or received by Feb. 28.

 

Hospital Auxiliary

Meets Feb. 20

The Sitka Community Hospital Auxiliary will meet noon Feb. 20 in classroom “B” in the hospital basement. An update from administration will follow a brief business meeting. Members may get a free lunch at the hospital bistro.

 

Piano Soloist

Set to Perform

Piano soloist Joe Hauer will return to Sitka to give a piano recital 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

Hauer will perform pieces by Modest Mussorgsky, Maurice Ravel and others. He will be joined by Sitkan Rhiannon Guevin on several selections for voice and piano.

Hauer, from Milwaukee, has performed in venues and festivals all over New England and Wisconsin.

Tickets are available for $20 for adults and $15 for youths at Old Harbor Books, online at fineartscamp.org, or at the door.

Discovery Your Potential activities will be held Feb. 19-22 at Blatchley Middle School.

Parents are reminded that activities will be held regardless of weather, so students should dress appropriately. Parents should contact the school if a student has an appointment so they can locate the student for pick up. Students will be engaging in learning opportunities throughout Sitka.

 

 

CGSWA Offers

Scholarships

The U.S. Coast Guard Spouses’ and  Women’s Association of Sitka sponsors a $750 scholarship award for graduating seniors. Applications are available in the counselors offices at Sitka High, Pacific High and Mt. Edgecumbe High. Copies also are at REACH.

Money can be used for post-secondary education, including colleges, universities, and technical, vocational or certificate programs.

 

Applicants must be a dependant of an active duty, retired, deceased or reserve member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Class of 1969

Meeting Slated

A meeting of Sitka High class of 1969 alumni will be 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Gus Adams Room at Sitka Public Library.

The purpose of the gathering is to discuss the 50-year reunion to take place July 19-21. The meeting is a chance for local classmates to brainstorm ways to support this event.
