TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Wolves Fall To Lions
By KLAS STOLPE

The Sitka High Wolves got a taste of the top-seeded team in the 3A Alaska hoops rankings, falling 74-44 to the Anchorage Christian Lions in the opening game of the 2019 ASAA March Madness Alaska 3A/4A State Basketball Championships at Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center today.
“ACS is the best team in the 3A conference,” Sitka coach Jarrett Harai said. “They’re a tough, well-seasoned team. It’s tournament basketball. All I can ask for is the team to come and play as hard as they can.”
Sitka fell behind 17-6 in the first quarter and could never make up that deficit.
Gavin Flores hit two free throws and a basket and John Arce scored to keep the Wolves within 14 points at 4:28 of the second stanza. Arce added two more baskets and Taccad a layup as Sitka trailed 40-25 at the half.

Sitka couldn’t close the deficit in the third and trailed 64-40 starting the final eight minutes of play.
“We didn’t come out with as much fire and competitiveness as I wanted in the first half. We didn’t get to the free throw line as much as I wanted. We settled for a few too many outside shots. We played hard today. We will come back tomorrow morning and compete harder.”
Tacaad led Sitka with 14 points, Arce added 10, Flores 8, Asa Demmert, Morgan Simic and Austin Morrison 4 each.

The Wolves went to the charity stripe just six times and made four. The Lions were 12-15.
ACS was led by 18 points from Demarcus Hall-Scriven, Danilo Guzman added 17, and Orlando Lozano 15.
ACS out-rebounded Sitka 33-23. Taccad had 6 for the Wolves and Mason Martin-Eubanks 5. Aedon Dumag and Taccad had two steals apiece.
Sitka plays Friday against the loser of the Nome and Eielson (game score not available by press time).

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
