TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

State Budget Hearing Planned Here Sunday
By Sentinel Staff
A public hearing by the Alaska State House Finance Committee on Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposed state budget will be held in Sitka Sunday.
The 2-5 p.m. hearing at Harrigan Centennial hall will be chaired by Rep. Dan Ortiz, I-Ketchikan, a member of the Finance Committee and the majority coalition in the House.
It is one of a number of public hearings on the Republican governor’s budget that individual House Finance Committee members will be conducting in cities across the state this weekend.
In the news release announcing the hearings, the House majority coalition said that while the finance committee typically holds public input hearings in the capitol in Juneau, “the proposals contained in the governor’s budget this year would fundamentally change life for many Alaskans: everything from the university and K-12 schools to the Alaska Marine Highway System and Pioneer Homes are slated for deep cuts under Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposal.
“Given the historic nature of the decisions before policymakers and the fact that our savings accounts have been spent down, the committee is going above and beyond to listen directly to Alaskans.”
“Cuts and efficiencies are possible and necessary,” said House Speaker Bryce Edgmon, I-Dillingham, “but these proposed reductions would have significant impacts on elders and youth, rural and urban residents, and every facet of our economy. Because of this stark reality, all budget decisions must be informed by input from people across our state.”
The finance committee hearings on the budget will be held in Juneau on Friday, March 22; Ketchikan, Wasilla, Bethel and Soldotna on Saturday, March 23; and Anchorage, Fairbanks and Sitka on Sunday, March 24.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
