TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Wolves Earn Overtime State Win

By KLAS STOLPE
Sentinel Staff Writer
(ANCHORAGE) – Sitka High senior C.J. Taccad led the Wolves to a 54-50 overtime win over the Nome Nanooks this morning at the 2019 ASAA March Madness Alaska 3A State Basketball Championships in Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center.
“We just wanted to play another game,” Taccad, who played a team-high 30 minutes, said. “Especially for me, I’m a senior. That could have been my last game but I’m thankful for everyone on this team for helping me get another game.”
That next game is Saturday’s 8 a.m. contest to determine fourth place at the state tournament. The Wolves’ opening game was a 74-44 loss to the 3A top-seeded team Anchorage Christian Lions.
Taccad scored the last 4 points for the Wolves in regulation to secure a 45-45 tie, and then scored the first basket in the extra four minute session and the next two free throws for a 49-45 advantage.
After a Nome free throw Sitka senior John Arce hit a pair from the charity stripe for a 53-46 lead.
The Nanooks put a basket in to close to 53-48 but Wolves junior Asa Demmert hit another free throw to push the lead to a secure two possession game at 54-48.
A final basket by Nome came too late.
“I just wanted to take care of the ball so we could play another game,” Demmert said. “Us juniors, we owe it to these seniors, getting them another game.”
Sitka led 9-4 after one quarter but Nome went on a 12-0 run to open the second quarter and led 20-15 at the half.
Wolves senior Morgan Simic and Austin Morrison turned the momentum in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back-to-back buckets to take a 22-20 lead.
After giving up two hoops, the Wolves’ Demmert scored and Simic scored and was fouled for a 27-24 lead.
Arce and Demmert countered a Nome spurt to take a 31-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
It was all-hands-on-deck in the fourth stanza as senior Aedon Dumag, junior Gavin Flores, and Morrison helped the Wolves offense while their pressure defense gave them a 41-40 lead with 2:21 remaining.
Nome upped their own full court pressure to tie the score at 41-41.
Taccad then scored on a drive and after two Nome free throws tied the score, Taccad drove for the lead again.
Nome tied the game at 45-45 on a basket by Dawson Evans.
Overtime belonged to the Wolves and they moved on to play the winner of Barrow and Monroe (final not available by press time) Saturday at 8 a.m.
For Taccad, a Saturday game at state was motivation for his basketball career.
“Whenever I was shooting around I was always counting down in my head,” Taccad said. “Five, four, three .. thinking about a last-second shot at state. I’m just repeating it so when the games actually came I would be ready for it.”
Simic led Sitka with 10 points, Flores 9, Taccad, Demmert, and Arce 8 apiece, Dumag 5, and Mason Martin-Eubanks and Morrison 3 apiece.
Stephan Anderson had 16 to lead Nome and Gareth Hansen 12.
The Wolves were13-20 at the line, the Nanooks 7-12.
Flores led Sitka with 9 rebounds, Arce 7, Dumag 5. Taccad and Arce had 2 steals apiece.
The Wolves had just 11 turnovers to the Nanooks 16.
