TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Mt. Edgecumbe Girls 2 Points Shy Against Kenai

(ANCHORAGE) – The Mt. Edgecumbe High girls basketball team dropped a heart-breaker to Kenai in their opening game at the 2019 ASAA March Madness Alaska 3A/4A State Basketball Championships on Thursday in Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center.
The fourth-seeded Lady Braves fell 34-32 to the fifth-seeded Kardinals.
Mt. Edgecumbe will face eighth-seed Kotzebue, a 68-23 loser to top seeded Anchorage Christian, at 11 a.m. today in the consolation round.
Mt. Edgecumbe scored first against Kenai as senior Catherine Sunny (Nightmute) stole a dribble and laid the ball in. But the Lady Braves would find the hoop only one more time in the stanza as both teams struggled to run their offenses, with the Kardinals taking a 9-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
Seniors Sanora Bell (Yakutat) and Leticia Skaflestad (Hoonah) closed the score to 13-11 early in the second quarter and senior Brystel Charlie (Kwethluk) cut it to 13-11 with two minutes left before the half, but Kenai’s Hayley Maw hit a corner jumper for a 15-11 lead heading into the half.

Kenai made the spread 6 on a Brooke Satathite shot and Charlie answered for Mt. Edgecumbe.
Kenai pushed the lead to eight on back-to-back baskets by Maw but Edgecumbe answered with two baskets by Bell and another by Skaflestad to put to within 21-19 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Sunny hit a jumper for the Lady Braves second lead of the game at 22-21 with 1:35 remaining in the stanza.
Kenai’s Satathite hit the stanzas final basket and added a free throw for a 24-22 Kardinals lead with eight minutes left in the game.
Sophomore Autumn Beans (St. Mary’s) scored to open the fourth quarter, tying the score at 24-24, but Jaycie Calvert hit back-to-back shots for a 28-24 Kardinals advantage.

Bell was fouled and hit the first of two free throws and rebounded her miss, passing to Ashlyn Strom (Fort Yukon) inside to close to 28-27.
Kenai’s Kailey Hamilton hit a free throw and Calvert hit her third deep shot of the game to give the Kardinals a 32-27 lead with four minutes remaining.
Bell scored to bring the score to 32-29 with 3:40 left and junior Maggie Miller (Nome) hit a free throw to close to 32-30 with 3:22 left.
Sunny had her second steal of the game and scored to tie the score at 32-32 with 3:12 left.
Kenai put the last basket of the game on the board on a Satathite shot in close with 1:52 left to play.
Sunny drew her fourth foul with 35 seconds left and then her fifth with 22 seconds left, but Kenai couldn’t score from the line.
Mt. Edgecumbe forced a Kenai turnover with 6.4 seconds remaining but couldn’t get close enough to the basket for a high percentage shot.
Bell led Mt. Edgecumbe with 10 points, Sunny 9, Skaflestad 4, Beans, junior Vernae Ramoth (Ambler), Charlie, and Strom 2 each, and Miller one.

The Lady Braves were just 5-14 from the charity stripe, the Kardinals 5-10.
Kenai was led by 12 points from Satathite, Calvert added 11, Maw 6, Jaiden Streiff and Damaris Severson 2 apiece, and Kailey Hamilton 1.
The Lady Braves had 30 rebounds to the Kardinals 28. Charlie had 5, Bell 4, Sunny and Skaflestad 3 apiece, Ramoth, Strom, Tyra Brown (Chevak) and Faith Kameroff (Emmonak) 2 each, Beans and Miller 1 apiece. Satathie led Kenai with 6.
Charlie had 5 steals to lead Mt. Edgecumbe, Satathite and Streiff 3 each for Kenai.
Mt. Edgecumbe had 26 turnovers to Kenai’s 21, and 12 fouls to the Kardinals 14.

The Lady Braves were 13-37 from the field (35 percent) and 1-4 from beyond the arch (25 percent), the Kardinals were 13-41 (31 percent) and 3-17 (17 percent) from long range.
