Ketchikan Shocks All of Anchorage, Not SE With State Championship Win Over Dimond

By KLAS STOLPE
Sentinel Staff Writer
You have to beat the best to be the best – and the Ketchikan boys basketball team beat them all. Downing Dimond High in overtime 57-53 at the ASAA March Madness Alaska 4A State Basketball Championships in Anchorage on Saturday.
Ranked 8th in a field of eight at the state tourney, the Kings proved that the only digits worth remembering are 1974, the last time they won the state title 45 years ago, when current coach Eric Stockhausen was just 4 years old.
“Just very proud of the kids,” Stockhausen said. “They stuck together and they stuck to the plan we have developed over the year. Their character shone all weekend.”

Center on Saturday. (Sentinel Photo/Klas Stolpe)

Ketchikan opened the tournament beating number-one seeded East Anchorage 60-58 Thursday and then Soldotna in Friday’s semifinal 53-48.
On Saturday All-State Tourney selections junior Chris Lee scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while senior brother Marcus Lee had 14 points and 6 assists.
The game was tied 10-10 after the first quarter and Dimond led 31-23 at the half as M. Lee hit a long shot to cut the lead to single digits.
“We practice very intensely, focused and really try to explain why we do something,” Stockhausen said. “They become coaches for each other and we stay focused on the task at hand.”
Dimond led 41-39 after three quarters.
Key to Ketchikan’s win was team defense. Every Kings player on the court jumped to pressure and switched to help.
“We changed our defense from previous years and it took a good two months or so to become proficient,” Stockhausen said. “We needed intense ball pressure and force the offense to do what we wanted. Push in transition and play a lot of guys who all learned their role.”
The game was tied 50-50 at the end of regulation.
Junior Kristian Pihl had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed two long shots from outside the arch. Pihl would drain one with 44 seconds remaining in the four-minute extra stanza for a 53-50 lead. Marcus Lee would hit two crucial free throws to answer a deep shot by Dimond, and  senior Robert Hilton-Seludo tipped in a missed shot by senior Cody Kemble for the 57-53 final. Hilton-Seludo scored 5 points in the game, Wyatt Barajas 4, Kemble and Pihl 3 apiece. The Kings were 9-15 at the line, the Lynx 13-18. Dimond’s Isaiah Moses scored 19 points, Carter Moore 17, Jaren Carle 8, Evan Hoosier 7, and Noah Brandon 2.
After the game Stockhausen said his players remained him of his early season mantra.
“They all said - “You called it.” I told them the first day of tryouts - we would win it all. I told them a few times a week the same thing. I predicted we would lose 7-8 games and we would still win it. So they just reminded me of that.”
Ketchikan also won the state cheer championship on Wednesday with Juneau-Douglas the runner-up and Colony the cheer academic award winner. Seward won the small school state cheer title with Kenai the runner-up and Bethel the cheer academic award winner.
