Edgecumbe Honors Charlie, Evon

Sentinel Staff Report
Mt. Edgecumbe High seniors Brystel Anesia Charlie (Kwethluk) and Leon Paul Evon (Bethel) were honored at the cardinal and gold’s annual Athletic Awards Banquet on Tuesday as the 2018-19 Lillian Lane Award winner for best female athlete and the 2018-19 Bob Brown Award for best male athlete.
    Charlie is a four-year Senior.
She is a three-year varsity cross country runner and two-time cross country Running Letter Award winner and two-time State qualifier; a two-time Wrestling Letter Award winner, and four-time Basketball Letter Award winner.
She’s the State Champion Wrestler for 2018, and State runner-up for 2017; a member of the 2017 cross country Regional championship team, and the 2016 and 2019 basketball Regional championship teams; and the 2019 Region V Girls Outstanding Wrestler.
In her first year of wrestling, as a junior, Charlie grappled her way to a Region V title and runner-up finish at the state tournament while finishing with a 22-8 record.

This season Charlie was a team captain and won titles at the Lancer Smith, Ketchikan and Sitka tournaments. She won a second Region V title on her way to a rare undefeated season where she became Mt. Edgecumbe’s 26th state champion. At the end of her senior year USA Wrestling ranked Charlie 20th in the nation at 135-pounds.
During her short time in the MEHS women’s wrestling program, Charlie amassed a record of 53-8 and coaches said she brought with her a winning attitude that demanded hard work and success from herself and her teammates.
Running coaches said Charlie showed up every day with a smile and a willingness to work hard and improve her speed and skill, and encouraged the athletes around her with her work ethic and positive attitude.
Charlie was a four-time varsity basketball player and two-time starter and multiple team captain; a two-time Region V All Conference selection; and an All-State Tournament selection.
Basketball coaches said Charlie brought intensity to the team, taught the team work ethic and how to practice like they play. She puts 150% in everything she does, the coaches said, and is a young lady of few words who shows how she feels by the work she puts in on and off the court.
She carried a 3.44 grade point average in the classroom. Last year’s Lillian Lane Award went to Laura Ekada (Elim).
Lillian Lane (of Point Hope), a 1975 MEHS graduate, is considered the best female athlete in school history. A four-time All Conference athlete in volleyball and basketball; Top Citizen Award winner; Honor Roll; voted Best All-Around Student/Athlete; student leader in the dormitory, clubs and Student Council; track & field shot put champion and runner; cheerleader; and Eskimo Olympic toe kick champion.
She was class president three years; food committee organizer; cheerleading captain three years; ETHATA president three years; Central Council sgt.-at-arms one year and  vice president a year; on the Honor Roll four years; and was Honors Dorm president.
Leon Evon is a three-year senior.
He is a three-time cross country Running Letter Award winner and a State qualifier; three-time wrestling Letter Award winner, three-time wrestling Region V champion (2016, 2017 & 2018); and two-time State wrestling third place finisher (2017 & 2018). He was a region champion and state qualifier as a freshman while in Bethel. At MEHS Leon wrestled his way into three more region championship matches, winning two of them. His loss came from an injury default in a match where he was ahead.
Leon placed third at the state tournament both his junior and senior years. At MEHS Evon amassed a record of 87 wins, 29 losses. Including his freshman season in Bethel, Evon finished high school with a record of 104 wins, 34 losses.
Wrestling coaches said Evon’s biggest addition was his coachability and hard work, characteristics that led him to become a two-time captain and helped the MEHS team earn three Region V team titles. More importantly is that Evon made those around him better wrestlers and better people by example through his actions, the coaches said.
Running coaches said Evon is a natural leader with quiet encouragement. They said while coaches made a lot of noise, Evon’s leadership style was from within the group, making very little noise while encouraging and directing his teammates. Evon earned the right to represent the cardinal and gold in many races and earned his varsity letter in cross country three years in a row.
The coaches said he’s a hard working athlete who raises the level of his teammates by working diligently each and every day, never complaining, and showing good sportsmanship during and after competitions.
Evon carried a 3.35 grade point average in the classroom. He was awarded the Bob Brown Award last year as well.
Bob Brown, a 1971 Edgecumbe grad, was an excellent athlete at the school in the late 1960’s and early ’70s. Brown died in an Alaska Airlines crash in Juneau while he was on his way to start his college career at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka in the fall of 1971.
Also honored Tuesday night was teacher and wrestling coach Mike Kimber who has retired from his coaching position after 19 seasons as head coach. In that time achievements include 26 individual wrestlers earning state titles, 16 Region V team titles between the men’s and women’s programs; three unofficial and two official team championships for women; three top-5 finishes for the boys team and a dozen top-10; three wrestlers voted as Outstanding Wrestlers at State tournament; 10 times wrestlers achieved individual All-American status; two National Champions; Team Alaska Women’s Dual team national championship (two MEHS grapplers on team); 2016 National Wrestling Coaches Association Alaska coach of the year; and 2019 Alaska Wrestling Hall of FAme inductee.
Also recognized were Andrew Friske and LieuDell Goldsberry and the Region V basketball tournament that brought 550 students/athletes, coaches and thousands of spectators to the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium; the MEHS videographers; coaches and coaches’ families; and the student athletes’ efforts in the classroom.
