Artist-in-Residence Abel Ryan
At Museum Through July20
The Sheldon Jackson Museum will host artist-in-residence Abel Ryan (Tsimshian) through July 20 at the museum.
Ryan will be in residence at the museum and working in the gallery most days. He will give a presentation on the carving of his first totem pole 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20. In addition to working in the museum gallery, Ryan is working with the museum’s partner, Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and teaching its middle and high school students.
Ryan is a member of the Laxiboo Clan of Metlakatla. He studied Tsimshian arts from master carver Jack Hudson in Metlakatla as a child and later went on to attend Sheldon Jackson College and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
A wood carver and metal engraver, Ryan enjoys making masks bowls, spoons, bracelets, rattles, earrings and pendants, and painting. Last year, a retrospective of his work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Juneau Douglas City Museum. A full-time artist who has been in residence many times at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, he currently lives in Juneau.

Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The museum is closed holidays. Summer admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors. Visitors 18 and younger are admitted free of charge. Assistance is available for visitors with special needs.

Land Trust Meets
The Sitka Community Land Trust will meet 6:15-7:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Sitka Public Library. The public is being encouraged to attend.

Hazwoper Training
Listed in Sitka
SEAPRO will provide Hazwoper training in Sitka this month. The eight-hour recertification training will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Aspen Suites conference room.
The course will likely include a boom deployment in the afternoon. Attendees should take weather-appropriate gear such as boots, raingear, and a hat/sunglasses if needed.
For individuals who need the 24-hour Hazwoper Initial Certification, a hybrid course will be offered, which includes eight hours of classroom training, such as the June 18 one, plus 16 hours of self-paced online training.

Chamber to Meet
Sitka Summer Music Festival Director Zuille Bailey will speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
Bailey will provide an update on the Sitka Summer Music Festival’s activities from the last year, share highlights about the performers and events of the June Festival, and offer a brief performance at the luncheon.
On Dean’s List
Sitka High 2017 graduate Connor Fulton has been named to the University of Alaska Anchorage dean’s list for spring 2019.
To be listed, students must attain a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 credits.
Fulton is studying pre-med and has been accepted to the UAA Radiology Technology Program this fall with clinical rotations in Sitka and Anchorage.
He is the son of Kris and John Fulton of Sitka.
Birthday Party for
Charlie Daniels
A party for Charlie Daniels, a lifelong Sitka resident, will celebrate his 90th birthday on June 15.
His family invites members of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and other friends to attend his birthday party 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Swan Lake Senior Center.
Lunch will be provided. DJ Clint Daniels will provide music to re-live the dancing days. Attendees are asked to take their appetites and stories to share.
STA Kayaani
Panel to Meet
Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Kayaani Commission will hold an open meeting 6:30 p.m. June 13 at the Resources Protection Building, 429 Katlian Street.

Rockfish, Shellfish
Rules Discussed
Alaska Department of Fish and Game will present information on rockfish and shellfish 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Crescent Harbor shelter.
Staff will be available to talk about current and future rockfish regulations, species identification, types and proper use of deep-water releases, and rockfish survival when release devices are utilized.
A limited supply of release devices will be available for distribution.
Department staff also will be on hand to answer questions about shellfish regulations and gear requirements. Pot owners are invited to take them. Staff will provide instruction and/or materials to bring gear into compliance.
