TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Planning Panel Approves Rental, Subdivision Items

The Sitka Planning Commission Wednesday night approved a preliminary plat for a minor subdivision on Shotgun Alley and a conditional use request for a short-term rental on Halibut Point Road.
The commission took care of a short agenda in short order, meeting for only about a half hour, at Centennial Hall.
The first item, a request for a minor subdivision filed by Lisa Busch and David Lubin, would create a new lot at 213 Shotgun Alley in the single-family low density zoning district. The new lot would meet the 15,000-square-foot minimum lot size requirement for that zone.
The couple plans on building a small house on the newly created lot. The un-subdivided lot currently has a house on it which the couple rents out. Lisa Busch spoke at the meeting, explaining that constructing a house on the new lot would not require variances or conditional use requests. Busch noted that a house once occupied the site on which they plan to build.
A neighbor, Frances Brann, attended the meeting and expressed support. A letter from another neighbor, also in support of the subdivision, was read by Planner Amy Ainslie. Commission members Taylor Colvin, Victor Weaver, Chris Spivey and Randy Hughey all voted in favor of the proposal.
The panel also unanimously passed a request for creating a short-term rental at 3106 Halibut Point Road, which is in an R-1 zone. The house is owned by David Lambdin. He and his attorney, Denton Pearson, attended the meeting and spoke about the proposal. They said Lambdin, who is retired, will continue to live in the three-bedroom house and rent out extra rooms in order to help pay his mortgage.
Before adjourning, commission chairman Spivey noted that the meeting was the last one for Colvin, whose term expired, and thanked him for his service.

City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
