TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Sitka police logged the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
June 20
At 2:15 p.m. a caller said a man with a lot of tattoos and wearing a red hat on backwards was walking around Centennial Hall talking to himself and appearing to be on some kind of drug. An officer found the man near the library but he wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary.
At 2:33 p.m. a caller said a driver in a big shiny black truck blew the stop sign at Marine and Erler streets. A partial plate was given but dispatch couldn’t match it with the truck.
A domestic violence order was given to dispatch to be served.
A caller in the 2100 block of SMC said her large dog had just died and she needed help loading it into her truck to take to the veterinarian clinic. An officer responded.
At 4:45 p.m. a caller said a man in a red hat was tweaking hard, sparring with imaginary people and just acting strange at 705 HPR. An officer responded and noted the man was walking down HPR.
At 5:20 p.m. Lifeline asked for an ambulance for a woman who had fallen on Indian River Road. However, shortly afterward Lifeline called back to cancel the call.
A caller reported suspicious activity regarding his mail and a credit card. An officer gave the caller the number to the Postal Inspector, and some options.
A caller on Lake Street said he’d dropped bear spray and it had gone off in his face. EMS responded and assisted the caller.
At 9 a.m. a caller said an intoxicated man with no shoes was walking around in the 6000 block of HPR, and didn’t seem to know how he’d gotten out the road. Officers were unable to locate the man.
At 11:13 p.m. a caller said a man had just fallen outside a liquor store and was in and out of consciousness. EMS and officers responded, and the man was taken to a hospital.
At 11:59 p.m. officers made contact with two vehicles on Eagle Way that appeared to be unoccupied. While on scene they heard rustling coming from the back of one truck where they found a man and woman who stated they had been smoking marijuana. They declined to allow officers to search the vehicles.
June 21
At 12:15 a.m. an officer made contact with several individuals setting off fireworks in the 900 block of Lincoln Street. One man said he was unaware it’s illegal to set off fireworks in city limits, and agreed to stop.
At 2:11 a.m. a caller said a friend was upset and had told him she was taking a pill and going to be with her grandson, who had recently died. The caller believed she was staying in a hotel but didn’t know which room. Officers were unable to locate her, and a message was left on a phone number her employer provided.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received four ambulance calls Thursday, and at 10:35 a.m. sent a truck to 200 Flume Circle, where burning food had caused alarm but no fire.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
