TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Man Sentenced On Gun Charges
By Sentinel Staff
A Sitka man has been sentenced to four months in jail on charges related to twice firing a rifle inside his former girlfriend’s apartment on Edgecumbe Drive.
Charles W. Grogan III, 29, was found guilty of one felony and three misdemeanors after a two-day trial in Sitka Superior Court.
The trial was held in March, and Judge Jude Pate last week sentenced Grogan to 24 months, with 21 suspended, for the Class B felony of misconduct involving weapons in the second degree. Grogan also was sentenced to 30 days on misdemeanor counts: reckless endangerment (two counts) and misconduct involving weapons in the fourth degree. The sentences for the three misdemeanors are to be served concurrently with each other, but consecutively to the felony sentence.
The total time to be served is four months (25 months, with 21 months suspended). Grogan will be on probation for four years, during which time he is to pay restitution, and receive alcohol and substance abuse evaluations and counseling, and mental health evaluations and counseling, among other requirements.
The charges are related to an incident last September 21 in which Grogan fired a gun twice while he was in his former girlfriend’s apartment on Edgecumbe Drive. One bullet went through a wall and the other went through the ceiling and passed through the apartment on the floor above and out through the roof of the building, police said. The complaint said Grogan had gone there to repair previous damage to his former girlfriend’s apartment, and fired the shot into the wall when she was not present. The complaint said he fired into the ceiling after the two argued.
The charge of misconduct involving weapons in the second degree said Grogan knowingly discharged a firearm in the direction of a dwelling. The reckless endangerment charges said he created a substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person. The charge of misconduct involving weapons in the fourth degree said he discharged a weapon with reckless disregard for a risk of damage to property or risk of physical injury to a person.
Assistant District Attorney Amy Paige represented the state and Assistant Public Defender Robert Curran represented Grogan.
