Medvejie Runners Set Records
By Sentinel Staff
The longest day of the year saw records set at the 14th running of the Medvejie Solstice Race on Saturday, and two racers couldn’t figure out who would garner the new mark for the half-marathon.
Sitka High graduate (2019) and University of Alaska Anchorage signee, Skyler McIntyre; and returning Sitka High senior Dominic Baciocco continued their career of running side-by-side in training, Region V, and state races by covering the 13.1 miles (21.1 kilometers) in identical 1 hour, 20 minutes and one second times, breaking the finish line ribbon across both their waists as they crossed the line together and erasing 13 seconds from the old record of 1:20:20 set by Sam Scotchmer in 2017.

Logan Mull topped the 5K runners in 20:52, short of the 2016 record of 17:51 set by David Wilcox. And Amie Mull was the first female 5K finisher, and fourth overall, in 26:41. The women’s 5K record of 20:08 set by Amber Blackhurst in 2014 is safe for another year. Eli Orland kept pace through the race and finished second in 21:21 and Jonah Mull was third in 25:26.
Aaron Routon won the 10K with 40:19 as he chased his own record set in 2018 of 39:16, and Merideth Condon was the first female finisher, and fourth overall, in 46:50, meaning the women’s 10K record of 45:18 set in 2014 by Emily Clark and Emily Routon is safe for another Sitka season (Emily Routon took on the 5K this year and placed 15th in 36:48). Sam Scotchmer went after the 10K mark this year and placed second in 46:07 with John Baciocco third in 46:46.
The top female finisher in the half-marathon was Justine Webb who placed sixth overall in 1:50.44. The women’s record of 1:34:25 set in 2014 by Megan Lehmann is safe for one more training cycle.
