TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Committee to Meet On Filling City Jobs
By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Assembly Position Subcommittee will hold its second meeting noon Friday at Harrigan Centennial Hall to review vacant city government positions.
Up for review are two library staff jobs and a temporary post in the electric department.
The three-member subcommittee was established in May following a temporary hiring freeze implemented by the Assembly. Its task is to review positions as they come open, and recommend whether they should be filled. The recommendations – which may include alternative hiring solutions – go to the Assembly for action. The actual hiring of city employees is an administrative function.
The city charter says the Assembly “shall not recommend or direct the appointment or removal of any officer or employee of the municipal administration, except as provided by the charter.” The exception applies to the appointment of department heads, for which the administrator needs Assembly approval. The Assembly hires the city administrator and the city attorney.
Assembly member Richard Wein, who serves on the subcommittee with Valorie Nelson and Chairman Steven Eisenbeisz, said the intent is to “increase transparency in the hiring process.”
The first meeting on June 7 lasted about an hour.
“So far it’s been functioning well,” said Wein. “I believe as the city moves forward the need for such a committee will diminish in importance and we’ll go back to the regular process.”
Eisenbeisz agreed that the first meeting went well.
“We conducted business in a timely and efficient manner,” he said. “We asked good questions of the new positions being proposed and requested more information when not enough was given.”
The Assembly meets in regular session 6 p.m. tonight at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
