Wrestlers Compete in Anchorage, Ketchikan

By GARLAND KENNEDY
Sentinel Staff Writer
Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe wrestlers have given strong, early season performances in Ketchikan and Anchorage.
Both local teams competed in Ketchikan, Nov. 1-2. Edgecumbe’s Jillian Afcam took first place in the girls 112-pound weight class. Her coach, Jeff Sato, said “she had an undefeated weekend. And that was her debut in high school.”
Sato said “Dakota (Magnuson) made the final and she ended up winning it with an undefeated season, and this was her debut tournament too... she was the only one of the upper weights who had all falls.” Magnuson won the girls 160-pound weight class, then took first place in the overall, defeating Metlakatla’s Haley Lynch by fall.
Llyody Ayojiak took second place, losing by fall to Glenallen’s Alex Buck.
In the 125-pound boys weight class, Emilio Mangrobang took third. A.J. Moses did not place, but Sato said “125 is probably one of the toughest weight classes, so both of those kids did well.”

Looking towards the rest of the season, the MEHS coach said “I’m really positive about what we can do.”
On the Sitka side, the Wolves competed in Ketchikan and Anchorage as well.
“It went fantastic,” coach Will Patrick told the Sentinel.
Ketchikan was a “more difficult trip because John (Welsh) and Sid (Fleming), our two seniors and team captains, had to take the SAT.”
But at the Anchorage Christian meet last weekend, Nov. 8-9, the Wolves pulled out fifth place in a fierce competition.
Sid Fleming, finally back in action, took first place at 171. Colton Ewers snagged second at 112.
Max Johnson took third place in his weight class, 215. Coming in third as well was Hunter Littlefield.
“Littlefield at heavyweight lost his first match,” coach Patrick said, “but met the wrestler he had lost to later in the tournament and beat him the second time around.”
John Welsh came in fourth in the 189 weight class and Gabe VanVein took fifth in 215.
“We started performing really well and it kind of just lifted everyone up,” said Sitka’s coach Patrick.
The Wolves and the braves compete again this weekend, Friday and Saturday at Mt. Edgecumbe. The schedule is as follows.

Thursday @ MEHS
5:00pm Weigh ins and Coaches Meeting

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
