TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Health Report, City Seal On Assembly’s Agenda
By Sentinel Staff
A new city seal design, commission appointments and a report from the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium are among the items on Tuesday’s regular Assembly agenda.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in Harrigan Centennial Hall. Additional access will be provided through the city website and on the city YouTube channel.
One of the earliest items on the agenda is a six-month report by SEARHC President Charles Clement, on “Sitka’s Integrated Health Care System.” SEARHC took over responsibility for Sitka’s health care system in a merger with Sitka Community Hospital that was finalized August 1. Employees in good standing at the Sitka hospital were offered jobs at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center with employment guaranteed for a year.
The Assembly packet includes a page on SEARHC’s commitment to “rejuvenate and modernize” its campus, with groundbreaking starting in early 2021, construction 2021-24 and opening in 2024.
After taking up renewal of a marijuana cultivation facility license for Fiberflite at 120 Jarvis Street (Unit C), the Assembly will consider committee appointments: Wendy Alderson applied for the opening on the Sitka Planning Commission; Vaughn Morrison and Chris Ystad applied for the seat on the Gary Paxton Industrial Park board; and Gary Oines, Samuel L. Pointer Jr. and Wayne Young applied for the open seat on the Police and Fire Commission.
The Assembly also will consider the appointment of Craig Warren as the new fire chief.
Also on the agenda on first reading are a budget item to improve the restrooms at Lake and Lincoln streets, and a proposal for permanent registration of noncommercial trailers and vehicles eight years old and older.
The Assembly will also consider appropriations to the sinking fund and hear a progress report on the CARES Act working group.
A resolution is up for consideration to declare an economic disaster due to COVID-19 and poor regional returns of all salmon species.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
