TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Emergency Tips
September is National Preparedness Month, and a series of free distance-delivered workshops Sept. 28-Oct. 1 will provide tips on preparedness.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host Zoom workshops on what to do before, during and after a natural disaster or other emergency. Instructors include Art Nash, Julie Cascio, Sarah Lewis, Leif Albertson and Gina Dionne from Extension and David Holen of Alaska Sea Grant’s Marine Advisory Program.
Topics include:
–Preparing families for an emergency or disaster, noon-1 p.m. Sept. 28;
–Preparing for disasters: local resources and community responders, 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 28;
–Disasters and the home, 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 29;

Fish and Chips
Benefit Sunday
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a halibut fish and chip, clam chowder, fried bread and baked goods sale noon Sunday at the Legion Hall.
Donations are being accepted. Proceeds will go to Robert Nielsen to help with expenses following a house fire and the loss of his partner, Betty Jo Edenshaw.
Fish and chips are $15 and fried bread and clam chowder, $10. Baked goods are various prices. Call 747-8629 for delivery, or stop by the Legion Hall to eat or take out.
Clothing is needed for the occupants of the home – male pants size 38-34 and extra large shirts and jackets; and female pants size 10 and size large shirts. They can be dropped off at the Legion Hall.
STE Distributes

Sitka Tribal Enterprises will be distributing 537 food gift cards for $50.
Cards are offered one per household to families or persons affected by COVID-19. The program is open to all Sitka residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Tobacco and alcohol are not allowable purchases on the program.
Sitka Tribal Enterprises is contracted to establish and implement the Food Assistance Program on behalf of the City of Sitka while staying within the federal guidelines for expending funds from the CARES Act.
The application deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Applications are online at: www.sitkatribe.org or can be completed in person at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi, 200 Katlian Street, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A total of 1,300 packages will be distributed over the next three months on a first-come, first-served basis until all are distributed.

The application deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 (except Sept. 25). The fish distribution is tentatively scheduled for the 3rd week of October, November, and December. Applicants will be notified via email or phone of their scheduled pickup date.

Scholarship Panel
Volunteers Sought
Sitka Tribe of Alaska is seeking tribal citizens to serve on its scholarship committee, which is responsible for reviewing and approving STA higher education scholarships and STA adult vocational training scholarship applications.
The committee meets the third Thursday of each month, noon-1 p.m.

City Sales Tax
Rate to Change
On Oct. 1 through March, the city sales tax rate will decrease to 5%.
The city said the long-term commercial rental tax remains at 5% year-round and bed tax for rentals less than 30 days remains at 6% year-round.

SSD to Participate
In Food Program
Sitka School District is participating in the Summer Food Service Program at all school sites through December, or as federal funding allows.
Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
